Is Weight Lifting Earlier In The Day More Beneficial For Muscle Gain?

A frequently asked bodybuilding question revolves around the most effective time to train, with many wondering if early weight lifting sessions are superior for muscle gains. In fact, numerous bodybuilders make a schedule change to wake up earlier so that they can perform their weight lifting session, feeling that this is the most effective method for consistent muscle growth. Yet, is this actually so? The answer is not as obvious as some may believe.

A important bodybuilding technique for achieving maximum muscle growth is intensity, meaning that full effort must occur throughout each weight lifting set, and this principle involves disciplined mental focus that will determine the type of overall muscle growth. In order for a weight lifting session to provide a brutal level of focus and output, the bodybuilder must physically and mentally feel energized to engage in the given weight lifting session, and this very factor should determine when a bodybuilder best schedules a weight lifting session for maximum muscle gain.

Many are wise in scheduling weight lifting workout sessions during early morning hours, as they either experience their largest energy surge upon awakening, and feel the greatest motivation to engage in a weight lifting workout session at that time, or, due to hectic work and family obligations, cannot possibly schedule a weight training session at a time other than early in the day, prior to pursuing numerous personal obligations, therefore forcing such an undertaking. But many who attempt to pursue early morning weight lifting sessions despite having time to train later in the day must analyze their own emotional response to stress, and if they feel that early morning weight lifting allows them to provide the same level of mental discipline and physical intensity as an afternoon or evening weight training session, then they are free to continue such a practice, but if a bodybuilder senses an increase in energy and motivation during later hours, far beyond what is experienced earlier, then clearly, schedule allowing, the best time for that particular individual to perform a weight lifting workout session is later in the day, when he or she is able to focus maximum physical and mental effort towards intense weight lifting.

One other variable that must be considered is whether a specific weight lifting time allows for superior consistency, as some who pursue early morning weight lifting may find that on some days, due to fatigue, they decide to wake up later, and begin skipping workout sessions due to a loss in motivation. The bodybuilder should then decide if moving the weight lifting workout session later in the day is possible due to potential scheduling conflicts, and if making such a change is realistic, then this will be the best possible choice to aid in consistency.
Although weight lifting at different times each day is valid, and can prove effective if a bodybuilder is exceptionally dedicated, most weight lifters will find that performing their workout sessions at similar times each day increases the probability of long term dedication, as scheduling, a very important element in keeping humans on task, can propel a bodybuilder into regular weight lifting workouts through eventual habit, while to the contrary, constantly modifying weight lifting workout times can easily encourage a bodybuilder to skip workout sessions without feeling any sense of loss.

Although scheduling weight lifting sessions at the same time each day is preferred, those with constantly changing work shifts may have no option but to perform workout sessions at changing times based on their unpredictable work schedule, yet in such a situation, it's best to try and plan ahead as much as possible to determine when those workout times will be so that, mentally, you develop a sense of accountability towards meeting weight training obligations. This is far superior to the haphazard approach that many bodybuilders adopt, which normally results in skipped workout sessions.

An important factor in producing impressive muscle growth is to select a time of the day when mental energy is at high levels, and I recommend adopting this same weight training schedule if work and family obligations permit. Although there is no perfect period during the day to perform a weight training workout session that fits every individual, as this will depend upon personal schedules and circumstances, clearly, the best criteria in deciding when to schedule a workout session will be to select a time when maximum physical effort is possible, which will lead to an intense, productive weight lifting experience.
