1. Don't starve yourself and eat frequently. Many people try to "starve" themselves to lose weight. Not only does this not work (it can be only a temporary fix) but you can shut down your body's natural fat loss defense system. Eating smaller meals more frequently keeps your metabolism high and your body continually working towards your fat loss.

2. Lift weights! People are scared of the common misconception that lifting weights will "bulk up" your body. Actually weight lifting all areas of your body is still the most efficient method for fat loss. Bulking up occurs with programs aimed towards low reps with high resistance but you can burn fat by focusing on higher reps (but still adding weight over time).

3. Eat your main meal items last. If your dinner consists of salad, potatoes, a dinner roll, and a steak, eat your steak last. Eating your healthier and less fatty foods first will make you fuller by the time you get to your foods high in fat and calories. If you are full by the time you get to these you can save the remaining portion for a meal the next day.

4. Substitute your latte in the morning and soft drink at lunch for water. Surprise! Water is healthier than coffee and soda. Just one can of soda takes approximately 30 minutes of walking to burn off. Coffee has equally damaging health effects and drinking water throughout the day will give you energy (and avoid post-caffeine crashes).

5. Eat a big breakfast, and eat it every day. Starting your day by eating a big breakfast (proportionate to your other meals) gets your body's fat loss mechanisms going early on the day including your metabolism. By eating your bigger meals earlier in the day you also have more time during the day to be active and burn the calories as opposed to eating a big dinner prior to going to bed.

6. Workout daily. Of course this one seems obvious. If you have a lot of weight to lose, you can see results from just changing your diet. But all (all!) of the best methods for a thinner waistline include working out. You really should workout 30 minutes every day or 60 minutes every other day to keep your body working as it should.

7. Step on the scale daily and make goals. Be accountable for your fat loss. You may not see results daily (you may even gain weight due to normal weight fluctuations.) Setting a long term goal will help you to keep your eyes on the prize - a thinner waistline - and allow you to track your progress. Reward yourself with your favorite things - a new book, a movie, etc - when you see results. The ultimate reward comes at the end when you meet and exceed your goals!
