10 Tips to Stop Smoking for Good
With so many options, tips, and suggestions, it is hard to determine which one is the best one. With so much information out there you may feel it is easier to keep smoking than it is to research all of the possible ways to quit. However, taking the necessary steps to finally stopping smoking is the best thing for your health and I can save you the hassle of most of the research by providing you with ten tips to stop smoking for good.
You probably already know that if you quit smoking you will be a healthier person. Quitting smoking will make you healthier, but, while you are in the throes of cravings and withdrawals you may be tempted to light up again. Reading and following some of the tips I will provide you may help you overcome some of the obstacles of quitting smoking and put you on the right track to a healthier smoke free life.
Tip #1 First you must come up with a good reason to quit. It is obvious why a person should quit smoking, but, your desire to quit needs to come from the inside. Needing to quit and wanting to quit are different. Most smokers will say they need to quit, but, they don't want to quit.
Tip #2 Look for little rewards that will give you more of an incentive to quit smoking. Your health is an obvious reward, but, what other rewards will you get from quitting smoking. These can either be personal, social, or purchased rewards. For example, one reward will be the way you smell, another will be that you can sit anywhere in a restaurant not just the smoking section, or maybe with the money you save from not smoking you can buy yourself something nice or save up the money and go on vacation at the end of the year.
Tip #3 Plan your attack against the addiction. Make a decision of how you are going to carry out your quit smoking plan. Set the date you want to start and the amount of days to reach each of your goals. If after about 6 weeks you are still not completely smoke free, you may want to readjust your plan.
Tip #4 Find out why you specifically smoke. Determine if it is solely the nicotine that you crave, the habit of doing something with your hands, or whether you smoke due to boredom or stress. Finding out why you smoke will help you to becoming a non-smoker because you will learn that you will have to find an alternative for your reasons.
Tip #5 Discipline yourself for your shortfalls. Set up some sort of punishment for yourself when you smoke against your set plan. If your goal was to only smoke 3 cigarettes and you smoked more, cut off something you normally do. For example, if you usually stop and get a cup of coffee from Star Bucks on your way home from work, don't, unless you have adhered to your plan.
Tip #6 Get help and support from family and friends. Allow them to help hold you accountable.
Tip #7 Get someone to quit smoking with you. If you try this task alone you have a greater risk of failing than if you had someone going through the same struggles as you. A quit smoking buddy can help hold you accountable and provide you with support.
Tip #8 Make sure you are getting a good night's rest. To quit smoking is hard work on the body and the mind and you need plenty of sleep to help with the transition. If you are not getting enough sleep your crankiness may be elevated.
Tip #9 Make your main goal be that you are quitting for good, that this is your final time to quit smoking and you are going to succeed this time. If you believe that you will quit, your chances of actually doing so are greater.
Tip #10 Keep yourself occupied and your mind busy. If you can find things to do that keep your mind off of the cravings and the want for a cigarette you will be better off and your likelihood of quitting are higher. Read, exercise, join a club, talk on the phone, surf the net, etc.
