A Short Guide To Eyelid Surgery

Tags:

What does blepharoplasty mean? Put simply this is eyelid surgery - 'yikes' I hear you say. This is not just some cosmetic swindle or a dodgy celebrity stunt. It is in fact both a medical and a cosmetic procedure that has fast become a common treatment and a necessary part of keeping ones appearance in tact. This is not just something that women alone opt towards, but many men have been seen to pay a visit to the surgeon to get rid of those unwanted bags under their eyes.

Medically surgery can be done to get rid of infected growth formation - much like my recent blepharitis ordeal! These procedures are done quite differently from the cosmetic surgery that is often mistakenly categorized in the same bracket. Eyelid surgery is used for people looking to create a more youthful appearance. The first part of your face that people notice in the aging process is the eyes. The skin around the eyes tends to lose its elasticity, forming wrinkles and sagging in texture.

For many women this can be a disconcerting experience and many people are trying their best to try and defy the aging process. Surprisingly some men suffer from a discolouring of the eyelid and can often look like they have a very thin layer of skin that is severely creased up around their eyes. Eye sagging and wrinkles can be caused from a number of different things, which can include kidney illnesses, aging, fatty deposits building up, specific skin conditions, eyes puffing up due to skin allergies and change in lifestyle.

People find that lack of sleep and leading an unhealthy lifestyle could factor in premature wrinkles developing around the eyes. However, no one can truly stop the aging process, but some people will try at great lengths to prevent the process from happening too soon. People with depleted skin around the eyes will find that it is much more difficult to try to treat the skin using eye creams. In this case, eyelid surgery is better to remove the tired worn out look. There are risks involved with this kind of surgery, like many other surgery, however, the results are impressive with skin looking younger.

Eyelid surgery removes the fatty prolapses in the eyelid and the excess skin that cause the droopy look. This is largely done on the upper eyelid rather than the lower lid, as there is relatively lower movement and smaller wrinkles on the lower lid. Natural facial movements of the face cause the lower lid to develop smaller wrinkles, which is permanent. These can be reduced by using collagen refillers or laser surgery. The eyelid surgery procedure is done under a local anaesthetic and only requires a half day to complete.

Before the surgery can take place people are recommended to go for a consultation with the main practitioner, which is then followed by a full medical examination. Afterwards, assuming everything is up to scratch, you are given a month to prepare before the surgery date. This entails avoiding specific medications, keeping healthy (avoiding colds, flues etc), drinking plenty of water 6 hours before the surgery and keeping well rested the night before the surgery. The normal resting period after the eyelid surgery is usually around a month, however, patients are able to apply make-up and begin physical activities after just 14 days.
