Remedies for Acne Control - 5 Essential Tips

Acne is a common problem, especially among adolescents although it can last through the twenties to the thirties in some cases. There are a variety of remedies for acne control including medications and methods to control the acne that you need to put into place at home. It is important to control the acne as severe cases can lead to disfigurement and scarring in the long term and pain and embarrassment in the short term. Everyone is different so a method that works for one person may be less effective for another. Learn how your acne responds to different treatments then carefully stick to the acne control methods that are right for you.

For severe acne it is best to be under the care of a dermatologist who can prescribe the most effective medication and advise on methods to control your acne. Hormone imbalance in the teenage years is a major cause of the overproduction of sebum by the sebaceous glands. too much of this oily substance on the skin attracts dirt and dust which allows the bacteria that causes acne, Propionibacterium acnes to thrive.

Tip no 1 - keep your skin clean

So one of the most important things you can do is to make sure your akin is cleansed properly. This does not mean embarking on a vigorous session of scrubbing your face! This will only cause more irritation and make the condition worse. Gently clean the face with a soft cloth and a mild soap containing sulfur. Use a clean wash cloth or use cosmetic sponges or disposable cotton swabs. Boil your wash clothes regularly to avoid spreading bacteria around your face.

Use a cleanser specially formulated for acne control and avoid anything that contains alcohol. Wash your face at least twice a day. Wash your hair at least every other day as oil from hair touching the face can contribute to the problem. Avoid touching your face at any time.

Tip no 2 - Do not squeeze pimples

It is very tempting to squeeze pimples but it is the worse thing you can do. When you break the membrane of the pimple bacteria are released under the skin and spread out. This will, of course, cause further problems!

Tip no 3 - Use a steam bath twice a week

Steaming your face regularly helps to deep clean the pores and stimulates healing. Add herbs to very hot water, place a towel over your head and allow the steam to penetrate the pores. Some herbs to try include the following :

1.Aloe - anti inflammatory, antibiotic, healing
2.Allantoin - stimulates the growth of new tissues, temporarily relieves skin irritations
3.Rosemary - stimulates circulation, tones the skin
4.Witch Hazel - antiseptic
5.Sage - antiseptic, anti inflammatory, healing

Tip no 4 - eat healthily

A good diet is, of course, essential for overall health but a diet deficient in nutrients and minerals can contribute to the severity of acne. Your diet should include plenty of fresh, colorful vegetables, oily fish and whole grains. Avoid caffeine, saturated fats and too much sugar. It is important to drink plenty of water, at least eight glasses a day.

Tip no 5 - change your pillowcase

Oil and dirt from the skin rub off onto your pillowcase and eventually find their way back on to the skin. use a clean pillowcase at least every other day to avoid making your acne worse.

Follow the remedies for acne control outlined here regularly and you will soon see an improvement in the severity of your acne.
