Asthma Remedies - Breathe Easy With These Natural Remedies

With the air, water and food we take in getting contaminated by various means, no wonder that the number of asthma patients are on the rise around the world. The exhaust from vehicles and factories, industrial waste released into our water and the overuse of fertilizers and pesticides in farming are just some of the major pollutants. In addition to these, other causes of asthma are pollen, dander, anxiety, genetic factors and lack of physical activity.

What happens during an asthma attack?

When an asthma-prone person breathes in air, the lungs or the bronchial tubes get inflamed. The muscles around it constrict and mucus is formed, which narrows the airway inside. The person will find it difficult to breathe. They respond by wheezing and coughing to make space for the air to enter the lungs.

When the inflammation is mild and manageable, it can be contained by some of these natural remedies that can be tried out at home. By including some of these remedies in the daily routine, it is even possible to avoid the asthma attack altogether. However, in case of severe attacks, bronchodilators are the best bet.

Natural Remedies

Honey: Honey is the best among home remedies and it is effective in almost all cases of asthma. Keep a pot of honey under the nose of the asthmatic person and let him/her breathe in the air just above the surface. This will bring immediate relief. Honey can be taken with water or milk daily as a precaution.

Garlic: Boil 10 garlic cloves in milk. This mixture taken once daily is very effective for mild asthma attacks.

Ginger: Inhaling the steam of ginger tea and crushed garlic pods twice a day is good to bring down the inflammation of lungs and bronchi.

Turmeric: Drinking a glass of milk mixed with a teaspoon of turmeric powder two or three times a day is excellent against asthma. It is most helpful when consumed on an empty stomach.

Steam inhalation: Boil water with caraway seeds in it and inhale the steam.

Hot water with licorice: Add half a teaspoon of licorice root tea to a glass of hot water. Keep it covered for 10 minutes and drain and drink the water.

Cloves: Stew four or five cloves in water. Let it cool down, add honey and drink this twice or thrice a day.

Mustard Oil: Mustard oil mixed with camphor, when rubbed vigorously on the back, will bring immediate relief.

Indian Gooseberry: Five grams of gooseberry mixed with a tablespoon of honey taken daily can prevent the inflammation of the air passage.

Bitter Gourd Root: A teaspoon of the paste of bitter gourd root mixed with honey taken at night for a month is a good cough syrup.

Safflower: Half a teaspoon of safflower seed powder or a teaspoon of safflower with a tablespoon of honey taken daily is helpful in keeping asthma at bay.

Deep breathing exercises: Yogic breathing exercises like pranayama, if done daily have the power to alleviate the problem before it starts.

Avoid some food items: Keeping away from some foods like egg yolk, meat and shellfish may prevent asthma attack.

Include fruits and vegetables: Studies have shown that those who are prone to asthma attacks can lessen the intensity and frequency of the attack by including more fruits and vegetables in the daily diet.

The list of home remedies for asthma is endless. Try out some of these and find out which among these is suitable to you. There is no harm in trying these simple methods. Incorporate them into your daily routine and you could be breathing easier in no time.
