Difficulties Involved In Tackling With Methamphetamine Addiction In Virginia

Methamphetamine has risen to the ranks of the most addictive forms of street drugs in the last ten years. Today, it is slowly becoming the most popular drug in Virginia, especially among the younger people. Cautious distribution of the drug in areas where its biggest market lies, such as in the seedy nightclubs of the state where most of its youth users hang out, has ensured that methamphetamine has reached an unshakeable place in the state for its popularity. At the same time, methamphetamine addiction in Virginia is an issue that is being very seriously looked into by the substance abuse authorities and there is immense care being taken, such as the various legal controls on any hint of supply or manufacture of the substance and its immediate ban on usage.

Presence of Methamphetamine Addiction in Virginia

Areas such as the Shenandoah Valley are known for the highest use of methamphetamine in the state. This is the place where methamphetamine made its first entry into the state and there is definitely a direct connection between the large number of Mexican immigrants that have been coming into the state and the increase in the methamphetamine usage. It is widely known that methamphetamine was a Mexican drug before it became an American drug and the country is a very strong source of methamphetamine supply to Virginia.

In addition, the drug has also been coming in through various other neighboring states, including Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia. In fact, the areas of Virginia bordering these states also have a very significant methamphetamine activity. The southwest corner of Virginia is the highest hit with methamphetamine addiction, and this is the area where the addiction has been increasing quite steadily since the past few years.

There is one more very important source of methamphetamine addiction in Virginia. This is the various meth labs that are clandestinely operating in various areas of the state. Meth labs are small two-person establishments that are operating in discreet areas of the state and that are synthetically producing methamphetamine and some other addiction amphetamines such as crystal meth in a very significant amount. This is possible because methamphetamine is a synthetic chemical that can be prepared using some very commonly available substances, which include cough syrups containing ephedrine and pseudoephedrine as their main ingredient, and other substances such as antifreeze and lantern fuel.

Though it may be thought that these labs would not be able to produce much of methamphetamine to be consumed on a statewide level, it is a definite misconception. In fact, each meth lab produces about ten pounds of methamphetamine and crystal meth each day, which are then distributed locally in the nightclubs and other such areas within the state. The supply is usually kept at a local level, but even then it becomes a very significant production.

The Dangers related with the Methamphetamine Addiction in Virginia

The greatest danger that is associated with methamphetamine addiction in Virginia is that the drug's use is mostly concentrated among the younger population of the city. People of the age group of 18 to 25 years are the most common users of this substance. This in itself is a big problem because the sooner a person begins with a methamphetamine abuse, the likelier it is that they will end up with a full-blown methamphetamine addiction. Hence, treating such patients becomes very difficult.

Methamphetamine is a central nervous system drug, because that's where it attacks the person. It creates a complete dependency within the person and the person finds it very difficult to kick the habit. The rehab centers have to do all they can in order to break the dependency.

There are meth rehab centers in Virginia, which as their name suggests treat only methamphetamine addiction and are quite adept at that. However, these treatment centers understand the importance of both detoxification and counseling if the people have to be brought out of the dependency.

The methamphetamine detox treatment becomes important because as long as the substance is not completely removed from the system of the person, the addiction will not subside. The patient will find the temptation for the substance again and again.

The counseling won't be effective at the start when the person is completely into the addiction; however, when the craving begins to wane, concerted efforts are made to explain to the patient what the repercussions of a methamphetamine addiction can be and how some techniques can be used in order to come completely out of the dependency on the substance.
