Preparing A Senior Alcoholic For An Addiction Treatment Program In Wyoming

It is true that preparing a senior alcoholic for an addiction treatment program in Wyoming or anywhere in the United States is one of the most difficult preparatory phases for addiction recovery. Even the treatment and the aftercare programs have to be handled very sensitively with the senior alcoholics. There could be several difficulties and issues if the senior alcoholics are not handled with proper care. Let us look at some of these problems usually seen while convincing a senior alcoholic to take up the addiction treatment.

1. The Denial:

There is a big rate of denial among the senior alcoholics. As drinking alcohol is the part of the social culture among the people, the senior alcoholics refuse to believe they could be addicted to alcohol. They refuse to even talk about any kind of treatment or even go for a health check. Most of these patients have been drinking alcohol since a long time and hence think that as they have been fine till now, nothing can happen to them.

2. Pre-Conceived Mindsets:

Most of the senior citizens believe that since they have been addicted to alcohol since a long time, sometimes almost life long, at this age it is next to impossible to make them get out of their addiction. Most of them are happy are happy to go as they are and not to be disrupt their peaceful life as there may be no health consequences they might have. Such an attitude is the most toughest to break, as they will not take reasoning for alcohol treatment seriously. They will most certainly avoid listening to you, if they don't like what you are trying to explain them.

3. Additional Addictions of Other Substances:

This is a very common stance seen with the senior alcoholics. They could have an additional addiction of substances like drugs. If a person is addicted to alcohol since several years, they would always want newer substance of addictions which would give them more pleasure and hangovers than alcohol. This dual addiction could also be very harmful to treat.

4. Intensive Dependency:

This problem again happens when the patient has been addicted to alcohol since a long time. The emotional state of patient's is totally dependent on the alcohol intake. All the emotions, of being happy or sad or irritated will totally be directly connected to the intake of alcohol. Their bodies would have become immune to alcohol.

Preparing a senior alcoholic is difficult. If there is a senior person in your family who is addicted to alcohol, there are certain things that you could start with. Lets us see them in brief:

1. The first step is to form an intervention group that will help to convince the senior patient to take treatment. This could be a minimum of three people, who are major influences in the patient's life. They could be one of the brothers or sisters, their trusted friends or even a community head or a religious leader the patient has utmost trust in. It is very necessary for them to be very committed to the treatment process. It also helps to have a professional interventionist at your side, in order to have professional and a correct approach. They are much more experienced and so can guide you at various stages, what is best for patient and what is not. They can also give you criteria on what to form your intervention group.

2. Once this group is finalized, the group will need to meet and strategize their plan of action. They need to decide on how they are going to approach the addict, what are they going to say or do which will affect the patient's mindset. The interventionist, if selected helps you to prepare your speeches. They also have effective indirect approaches which you can use. Here it is important to make the patient feel the love you have for him and that you care or him. They might feel that because of their addiction, you might not love them.

3. The next step after the patient is convinced to take up the alcohol treatment is to select an appropriate treatment program for them. If you have a professional interventionist, they will help you with this process. If not, an intensive study about the different senior alcoholic treatment programs in Wyoming must be done. You will find a lot of information on the state medical website, or the individual treatment center's office. Most of the times, the resident program is the most ideal for the senior patients.
