Problems Encountered In Administering Senior Alcohol Abuse Treatment In Alaska

Treating a senior alcohol abuse condition is far more different and difficult than treating a young patient. The treatment takes a much longer time and an intense interaction. Let us see some of the problems faced with the senior alcoholism treatment in Alaska.

1. Strong Denials:

This is one of the most sensitive and one of the important issues while dealing with the senior people. It is very much possible that there are some elders who have been addicted to alcohol the whole of their life, and to convince them to accept the treatment is the most difficult part. More over for some of them, they are not much inclined to make a health living for them. They prefer to choose alcohol over their health problems. Even the patients who have come through an intense intervention program are not completely over denial and that may be a problem if they do not respond to the treatment whole heartedly. Most of the alcohol abuse treatment centers in Alaska for seniors will have an additional process where in they make sure if the patient is completely over alcohol or not, before starting the treatment procedures as opposed to younger people.

2. Intensive Detox Treatment:

After the patient has finally agreed to go the treatment center, they are usually taken for health check up before giving them the detoxification treatment. There is always a possibility of the senior people have a supplementary health disease which needs to be taken in account while putting them under detoxification in order to avoid side effects. Also most of the patients here have been addicted to alcohol since a long time, and so they need to go through an intensive detoxification program to remove all the toxins which have taken residence in the body since years.

Detoxification process is a process of flushing the body and there is a complete stop of alcohol. Due to this the body reacts to the absence of alcohol. Since most of the patients here have been abused by alcohol since a long time, the withdrawal symptoms are very violent. Thus they have to be given some medication to help them reduce this urge for alcohol and so they can continue the detoxification process.

This is again complicated because these medications differ with each patient. The doctor has to also check the other health problems the patient might have and then give the medication accordingly.

Another problem with taking the medication to control the withdrawal symptoms is since these patients are heavily addicted since a long period; they could get the withdrawal symptoms from the medications too. This complication should be avoided. A bigger problem seen with the senior alcoholism abuse treatment in Alaska is when the patient has some co existing metal problem. That makes the detoxification process very complicated and extra sensitive. It becomes very difficult to then make them stay without alcohol.

3. The problems in aftercare:

The problems associated in aftercare alcohol abuse treatment in Alaska are more stressful than the others. Here they have to deal with the mind more than body of the patient because the mind is where the cravings for alcohol start. It is very tough to deal with the mind of an elder patient as compared to the young ones. The senior people are far more rigid. They may have formed their habit since many years and some from their early youth and hence they may believe that it is impossible for them to live without alcohol.

This misconception that resides has to be treated first. It is very important for them to believe that they too can enjoy a health and an alcohol free life. As it is, the senior alcohol abused find it more difficult to control their cravings than the younger alcohol addicts. This is so because these patients are hooked to alcohol whole their life and it is the only way of life they have lived. Hence it is not only difficult for the counselor but also for the patient.

For senior patients, it is always advised to do their aftercare treatment away from their natural surroundings and within a residential treatment center. This is so because firstly the patient needs to completely shut away from places or things that can trigger their urge for alcohol. And secondly, the community feeling in the treatment center helps them cure faster. They undergo various group behavioral theories. They are distracted by luring them towards various hobbies or sports. The doctors sometimes also use a spirit of competition to help motivate them to speed their recovery process.
