Should You Have Faith In The Faith Based Programs For Alcohol Treatment In Virginia?

Since the sixties, faith based treatment programs for alcohol treatment in Virginia have become quite popular. This was the time when the programs of the Alcoholics Anonymous and its offshoots were gaining a lot of momentum, and simultaneously several other faith based programs and spiritual programs were born around it. Most of these faith based programs directly use the 12 Step program that is formulated by the Alcoholics Anonymous, though some of them may have modifications of the twelve steps to suit particular preferences or requirements. Additionally, there will be a very strong spiritual approach to the entire program.

So, should you actually look at these faith based programs with seriousness? Do these programs really work? Most of them will not even have a medicinal program and may not even have detoxification which is considered to be a vital element for alcohol treatment. Deciding for these programs seems to be quite an unwise thing to do. But before being judgmental, let us see what a typical faith based program for alcohol treatment in Virginia will include.

The Basic Elements of a Faith Based Program for Alcohol Treatment in Virginia

The faith based programs for alcohol treatment in Virginia are exactly as their name suggests. These are programs that are based on reinforcing faith in the person's mind in whichever belief they hold. The basic element here would be to make the person feel that they are in an addiction today, but by beseeching the right kind of authority or power, they will gain the strength and the support needed to come out of their condition. This power could be the Divine Entity for the patient.

The program begins with a very careful intervention where the person is made to understand that they are in a problem and they need some respite to their condition. This can be provided to them by the Divine Entity they believe in. Their beliefs are stimulated and that is what makes them more confident and motivated about getting into treatment.

Once they are convinced about the treatment, they are made to go through the 12 Step program. Here, the first steps are about developing an understanding their problem, followed by acceptance. The later parts are about invoking their Divine Entity to help them out of their condition. The last parts are about understanding that they have erred with their addiction, they have gone astray and hurt a few people. They have to now make amends. Working with a volunteer to guide them, they now embark upon a journey to rectify all the wrongs that they might have committed in their influenced state. It is this acceptance and willingness to rectify wrongs that brings them close to recovery, understanding that it wouldn't do to repeat these mistakes in future.

Effectiveness of the Faith Based Programs for Alcohol Treatment in Virginia

So, do these programs work? If you see from a spiritual and even psychological point of view, there may not be another program as strong as these. These programs work at the religious and spiritual beliefs of patients and that works in most of the cases. The very notion that there is a Divine Entity helping the out of their addiction is what adds to the motivation and encouragement in the minds of the patients to go through the treatment. It gives them strength.

But, of course, this would depend on the bent of the patient's mind. It is important to consider what kind of thought process works in the patient's mind. Is the patient religious or spiritual? This will decide in a large way whether the faith based program would work on them or not.

There are several prayer sessions involved in this program, but that would make meaning only to people who can really believe in the prayers. People who do not consider religious and spiritual events seriously will not do well with these programs at all.

There is one more point to consider. Not all these programs include detox treatment. Some of them may refer patients to outside detox centers or may even have in-house facilities, but that is not always the case. If there is no detox for a patient who has been with the addiction since a long time, it may be a serious defect in the recovery process. The toxins in the patient's body can create health complications even later on in life. In any case, unless and until the toxins are removed from the body of the patient, it is very difficult to bring them successfully out of the pangs they get for alcohol.
