Understanding The Manner Of Working Of An Alcohol Rehabilitation Program

The first thing to be noted here is what alcohol rehabilitation really means. Most people think that alcohol rehabilitation simply means providing an alcohol addiction treatment to a person with the habit. But, in reality, this term means much more. In the context of alcohol rehabilitation program in the US, the meaning is 'bringing a person completely out of an alcohol habit and readjusting them to family, society and professional life so that they lead meaningful and constructive lives once again'.

Here we explain the general pattern of providing an alcohol rehab treatment in the US. Note that this is a general treatment pattern; there will certainly be differences in the way this program is implemented in each state according to their individual policies.

When a person is brought into an alcohol rehab center, the first thing that is done is to analyze their psychological condition. A strong emphasis will be laid on whether they are able to go through the treatment or not. The patient must be willing to participate in the program. If there is denial in the patient, then he or she will not respond to the treatment and then the whole process will be quite a waste. Hence, it becomes important to make them willing to go through the recovery process.

If there is denial, an intervention program will be used to bring them out of it. With the help of the intervention program, the patient will be guided on what their addiction is all about, what repercussions it can have on various aspects of their life and what they can do to get a grip on it. This usually is quite effective in coaxing patients to go through the alcohol rehabilitation program. If not, the family and friends of the person are involved. They are given professional training and rehearsals to effectively convince the patient to go through the treatment program.

Once the patient is out of the denial, which might be quite a long process in itself, a medical and psychiatric evaluation of the patient is done. This is to ensure that the person is physically and mentally fit to go through the addiction treatment. If the person has some complications, then a different mode of treatment such as the dual diagnosis will be used to help them out of their alcohol dependency.

Now, the patient is ready to go through the detoxification process. This is a very important step towards complete rehabilitation, because if the patient has to be brought back into normalcy, it is essential for the alcohol to be removed from their body. This has a binary purpose. Firstly, it protects the person from possible health complications in future because of the presence of the alcohol in it. Cirrhosis of the liver is known to be a very frequent condition in longtime alcoholics, even though they have managed to give up on the substance. Secondly, by detoxifying the patient, it is made sure that the person comes out of the addiction quicker. This is because as long as alcohol remains in the body, it will become very difficult for the person to come out of the addiction. Removal of the substance speeds up the recovery process.

Detoxification becomes a much integral part of the alcohol rehabilitation program in all regions of the US, but the treatment will certainly not stop at that. This is because detoxification can only remove the traces of the addiction from the body of the person, but the temptation surely persists in the mind of the patient. Hence, what follows now is an aftercare program.

The aftercare program for alcohol rehabilitation is quite comprehensive. It mainly looks after equipping the person to overcome the temptation for using the substance. The person is counseled on methods they must use to avoid alcohol consumption. They are trained in Yoga, massage therapy, acupuncture and acupressure, aromatherapy, relaxation exercises, meditation and breathing exercises that will definitely help them to come out of the addiction. This may be a long-drawn process, sometimes stretching to even a year, but it is important to help the person move towards complete recovery.

What is more important than these direct processes is a very emphatic endeavor to place the person back into normal living once again. They are urged to revive their friendships, join social clubs and take up hobbies that can help them forget their dependency. They are recommended to take up a job again if it helps them. The main intention is to make the person's life as meaningful as it was before the addiction. This is what really pulls them out of the addiction.
