Understanding What A Residential Addiction Treatment Program Can Do

For people who are with very difficult conditions of addiction the residential treatment program is considered to be the best option. As the name suggests, this is an inpatient treatment program in which the patient stays within the facility for a long period of time and moves towards a complete recovery process. Both facing the residential treatment program and dispensing it are complicated affairs; and both patient and provider need to be very acutely aware of the situation they are going through. However, for people with strong addiction conditions, the residential treatment program is the only possible option. Though harsh, this is what can pull them out of their intense chemical dependency and make their lives more meaningful.

There are some kinds of people for whom residential treatment program becomes obligatory. These people are:-

1. Those who have been with the addiction for a very long period of time and have been using the substance to a very large extent. They will need the complete program, including the detox, to bring them out of their dependency and to make their bodies free from the toxins that will have accumulated in it during their dependent life.

2. Those who have been convicted of some or the other crimes committed under the influence of substance abuse will be ordered by the courts to complete a residential treatment program or else their privileges might be curtailed. This is a way of bringing people who are in absolute denial to accept a recovery process.

3. Those who have some kind of health condition will be good candidates for this approach of getting into an addiction-free life. Again these people will be in strong denials and they will anyway need much more care and concern, which the residential pattern will provide them with.

4. Those who have some kind of mental distress will also find treatment in the residential pattern to be a suitable approach. They will be unable to determine themselves to get out the addiction with any other kind of approach. However, when they live with a group of medical experts and other people who are also trying to come out of their conditions like it happens in a residential program, they will find it much better to wrangle themselves out gradually from the addiction.

The residential treatment program is a community form of treatment. The basic concept of this kind of treatment is to make people with similar addiction conditions stay together in one facility so that they can be collectively guided to come out of their dependencies. The environment provided to them is medically controlled, and it is completely free not just of the substance of addiction but also of any kind of emotional signal or reminder that may cause them to feel distressed. There is complete care taken so that the people remain addiction free.

There is a lot of attention paid on educating the patients about the hazards of the addiction they were in. There are classroom sessions detailing the repercussions of their dependency on their personal, family, social and professional lives. They are told how their lives move towards imminent ruin when they keep up with their dependency. But at the same time, they are taught that they can come out of the addiction quite assuredly if they made a determined effort for the same. Hence, the educational pattern used in residential centers is targeted to create the optimism required in patients to bring them out of their addiction.

Even the families of the patients are kept much involved in these treatment modes. There are routine counseling sessions conducted for them, and in some centers there may be events such as three-day camps for the families of all the patients to come together, get counseled and motivated and share experiences with each other. This helps the families of the patients to learn how they can better cope with the addiction condition at home and what they can do to be of substantial help for the same.

The residential treatment program is a complete form of treatment. It creates in patients a sense that they must come out of their condition so that they can lead meaningful lives. It actually helps people to settle with their lives when they are out of the addiction. The maintenance treatment is kept up so that they do not slip into the addiction again, but people are coached on how they can become socially active once again. If they have an inclination to reenter into a professional life again, most residential centers will coach them for that too.
