What Can You Do After an Osteoarthritis Prognosis
After an osteoarthritis diagnosis, many patients are devastated. The damage done by the disease is not reversible, and progression is a very real possibility. Fortunately, if the disease is caught in the early stages, treatment is available to slow the progression and help people retain a good quality of life. So, instead of becoming resigned to a disease that can be controlling, choose to take charge of the osteoarthritis prognosis and continue to enjoy life.
An osteoarthritis prognosis is not the end of the world. It simply means a few changes are in order. For instance, patients need to:
* Follow the advice of the doctor
* Take prescription or store bought meds to control pain
* Lose unnecessary pounds
* Eat healthier
* Change or start exercise routine
* Rest when needed
For people experiencing pain of unknown origin for two weeks or more, it is time to visit the doctor, get a definitive diagnosis, and follow the advice given. Self-diagnosis may save money today, but it may be more costly in the end. Therefore, it is important to know exactly where and why pain has become a part of everyday life. Then, if the degenerative disease is confirmed, do what it necessary to improve the osteoarthritis prognosis.
Over-the-counter medications may be sufficient, but if a prescription is necessary to control the pain and discomfort, by all means do so. The treatment will help sustain a better level of activity, even while dealing with other issues to improve the outcome of the disease. Although gritting teeth and keeping a stiff upper lip sounds tough, it can also be excessively tough on the affected joint(s).
So, even while taking meds to control the discomfort, it is important to lose those unnecessary pounds and start eating healthier. No, it does not mean going on a diet. It means a total lifestyle change for some. With fast food and processed foods so readily available, it is so easy to sacrifice health in a fast paced society. However, for those who seriously want to improve their osteoarthritis prognosis, it is essential to make the necessary changes in maintaining a healthy weight and eating properly. In addition, most people will soon feel healthier in general.
Now, in conjunction with eating healthier, it is time to change or start an exercise routine. While high impact exercises are not good for the joints, low impact ones are necessary to strengthen the muscles around the joints. As the muscles become stronger, they provide more support, thus reducing the stress on the bones and the cartilage between them. Also, it will help in the effort to maintain a healthy weight. Fortunately, a good doctor will probably have suggested some good exercises to improve the osteoarthritis prognosis.
Finally, it is important to listen to the body. Rest, when needed. The joints will definitely grumble if taxed too much. Then, it is time to give the joint a break for at least 12 hours, and use assistive devices when necessary to relieve pressure on the joint.
So, if you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, it does not mean a total end to life as you know it. While you can still continue to do many of the activities previously enjoyed, it does mean you will need to make some changes necessary to improve your osteoarthritis prognosis. However, the payoff tomorrow will be worth the effort today.
