Is Whiplash A Minor Injury

Sometimes when we look through the news, it can seem unbelievable the amount that is paid out to people in compensation claims and the pendulum has swung from people suffering in silence to a much wider problem of the fear of compensation claims. This has led to many public events being cancelled and high insurance premiums to cover the risk of people claiming. The size of payouts really depends on the judge you get in your particular case as so much comes down to individual opinion and there is no hard and fast rule regarding values.

The most frequently sought compensation claim that injury lawyers deal with is for whiplash injuries. This is because, even in the most minor of accidents, whiplash can occur because the neck is a very vulnerable part of the body. It carries a fair amount of weight on a relatively flimsy support yet houses some of the most important nerves in our bodies.

Injury lawyers have secured compensation payouts ranging from 750 pounds up to 13,750. pounds The degree of the injury will play a part in the judge determining the size of the payout. It will depend on how much pain is suffered, any work time lost through the injury and the degree of the injury itself. This can include limited movement in the head, neck, shoulders and even arms.
Time span for recovery will also be taken into consideration and this will be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, in fact, it can take several months for a sufferer to completely recover.

An injury lawyer will build a case based on all of the above. The most common cause of whiplash injury occurs during a car crash, even at low speed, when the body decelerates suddenly and the head is jerked backwards and forwards in a whipping type motion. Bruising and inflammation can take a few days to surface and will then last around ten to fourteen days, varying depending on the force of the crash.

Symptoms will vary from pain and stiffness in the head with limited movement through to similar symptoms in the shoulders and arms. Another aspect that has to be taken into consideration when an injury lawyer is putting together a case is the impact these injuries will have on the sufferer's life - even in the short term.

It can make a lot of difference to a person's life if they are, say, a travelling salesman who cannot drive for several weeks after a whiplash injury. They will be losing money and possibly customers too. Many jobs require the need to drive and you cannot drive while still suffering from whiplash injuries as you cannot turn your head properly or quickly and this poses a safety risk.

Even if you are not a driver but suffer a whiplash injury while in a car, the limited movement that follows as well as possible headaches, dizziness and blurred vision can bring great difficulty to everyday activities, even though it should, in theory, be short lived.

Researchers are currently looking into the possibility that neck injuries of this nature have a possible link to the development of neurological disorders later in life, such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. Although this has not yet been proved, the possible implications for the cases of injury lawyers are immense if it turns out to be true.

The recommendation, should you suffer a whiplash injury, are to rest for the first day or two but then to exercise it, a little at a time until full movement is resumed. It will be painful but gentle exercise will speed up the healing process. A supportive pillow and painkillers taken regularly for the first few days instead of on a as when and needed basis are all helpful suggestions. If you find the problem and symptoms going on longer then treatment through a physiotherapist is recommended.
