Colic – It’s Effects On The Infant And Family And A Look At Some Commonly Suggested Cures And Treatments
A colic affected infant can be a nightmare for a family.
An infant with Colic usually means sleepless nights for both the infant and it's family members and lots of worries for the parents who feel helpless and stressed out because they feel that they are not giving their baby something it really needs. This can result in exhaustion and sleep-deprivation for both the infant and it's family. If there are other houses close by, such as in apartments, relations with nearby families can become strained due to annoyance and sleep-interruption to neighbours and landlords by the persistent crying of the infant.
Various people who make it felt that the parents aren’t caring enough for the child or doing something wrong in bringing up the baby may cause more problems.
Besides, so many causes and suggested sollutions exist, that some who have had success in curing their child's colic with a certain method may try to force it on others, with no result.
Keeping all this in mind, a site such as www.stop-crying.com have been established specially to aid parents of infants suffering colic.
Colic - Many people, many treatments
Colic is one of those diseases which has so many suggested cures that parents may be confused and bewildered, which has given rise to specialist sites such as www.stop-crying.com
There is at the present no universally accepted medical treatment for infant colic, and various doctors and medical professionals take different approaches to it.
These treatments may vary from one doctor to another and be of various types in various countries. A few doctors suggest simethicone, which treats gas trapped in the system of the infant. Some parents accept and others oppose the effectiveness of this particular treatment.
A few doctors go so far as to say that colic can't be treated at all but that is merely a sign of lack of knowledge.
A study showed a reasonable rate of success when "colicky" babies were prescribed dicyclomine, an anti-spasmotic drug
But, dicyclomine has 5% chance of side effects, usually death. Thus almost all parents avoid this treatment, because they don't want to take any risk at all with their baby.
Natural remedies such as Fennel, has been proven to eliminate colic or reduce it's symptoms greatly besides providing some digestive health benefits.
Probiotics have also been successful in some studies in curing gas and colic.
Certain herbs and herbal teas have been recommended to reduce symptoms of colic by some studies.
However, Scientists are of the opinion that more studies need to be conducted before recommending a specific method as a cure for colic.
Suggested cures which don't involve pharmaceutical drugs:
There are many suggested cures, which don't involve drug prescriptions.
Many soothing measures, which include pacifiers, making the child listen to white noise, and rocking the infant gently are usually effective in calming the child when it cries intensely.
Another method called the 5s method involves
1] Swaddling - wrapping children snugly in swaddling cloths, blankets or something similar
2] Making the baby lie on it's Side or its Stomach,
3] Swinging the baby gently,
4] Making an Ssshhhh sound in the child's ear
5] Providing the baby something such as a bottle nipple to Suck on
Some popular measures believed by many to cure colic include various changes in diet, routines, giving herbal teas to infants or taking the baby to a place or location with lots of fresh air or increasing the fresh air circulation in the house.
Another measure is to rub warm olive oil on the baby's hands and feet, then rub olive oil on the infant's stomach in a continuous clockwise motion. Other methods include holding the infant upright so as to reduce the pain and crying.
While many of these methods may help in various degrees, no one method can be said to be a 100% sure cure or be certified as effective for all babies with colic. Stop-Crying have therefore released an innovative ebook, containing a structured system to get around all possibilities to treat colic.
