Anabolic steroids' usage: from the very beginning up till now

Anabolic steroids have become so popular and frequently used nowadays that it’s hard to imagine the times when such useful concept was unknown yet. The history of anabolic steroids, their development is closely connected with the ancient knowledge of testicles’ role for male sexual activity. For many years medicine knew that testicles are extremely important for normal work of male sexual system, but only in the 19th century the active process of testicles’ characteristics’ investigation started.

Berthold made a great contribution into development of this branch of medicine. First experiments were, of course, held on animals. In 1849 Berthold used cockerels for investigation of the role of testicles for the whole organism and genital system particularly. After removing cockerels’ testes scientists noticed that birds have lost characteristic features that are normal for male cockerels, it was mostly connected with sexual characteristics of the birds and their functioning.

These experiments helped the scientists to make a conclusion that testicles are responsible for male sexual reactions, functioning and other characteristics connected with genital system. Besides testicles exactly are responsible for differences between male and female, they literally make men feel and be men.

These experiments with cockerels also gave important and useful information. In the result of transplantation of testicles of the cockerels to other birds it was discovered that it had no effect on abdomen. Besides after dissection scientists didn’t notice any nervous connections that could appear after transplantation. Such results of transplantation helped the scientists to come to the conclusion that testes have a great influence on blood; this effect is also systematic for the whole organism. Well, it can be said that the history of anabolic steroids begins with the investigations and useful experiments of Berthold.

The experiments on animals proceeded, and in the course of time bull’s testicles were used for producing medicines helpful for increasing of potent function. That was in 1929, some years later scientists established an even more effective sample of such extract that was already in 1935. One more scientist also made a contribution into the process of steroids’ development – Ruzicka decided to synthesize testosterone from compound cholesterol and received stimulating extract. Such process of synthesizing was also used by two other scientists named Hanisch and Butenandt.

Nowadays it is well-known that testosterone was a ‘pioneer’ among anabolic steroids used in any times. Besides today this steroid still remains one of the basic ones and is rather popular among its users. Experiments on different animals didn’t stop and in 1936 one of such experiments showed that nitrogen excretion of dogs which were castrated can be strengthened if the dog would be given testosterone, besides it would influence the weight of the dog, it would increase.

In the course of time the process of steroids’ investigation has become active enough for safe experiments on men and they gave extremely useful results. Scientists proved that testosterone really has a great influence on human potency.

In 1948 and 1954 the process of investigation activated so much that two pharmaceutical firms also took part in it. These firms (Searle and Ciba) decided to experiment with various types of testosterone. Different derivatives of it were synthesized together with numerous analogues of this substance.

Steroids had the greatest popularity in different kinds of sport. In 1950s steroids were already used by soviet sportsmen for gaining the best results in weightlifting championships, in the course of time steroids became popular in other countries of the world and used a an essential part of the training program for Olympic sportsmen, especially weightlifters.

1956 was the year of Methandrostenolone’s creation; a little bit later it was called "Dianabol". It was produced in the form of little pink pills, there were many differences among first steroids and »Dianabol", it was more effective and safe, in the course of time "Dianabol" could be met in different countries. Those times were the first years of steroids’ wide usage. Scientists preceded further investigations of steroids and their effect on the organism of their users and understood that effectiveness of anabolic steroids depended very much on their dosage. Very often it happened so that steroids didn’t have any visible effect; it was due to low dosage of the drugs.

Nevertheless some time later, in 1967 International Olympic Council prohibited the usage of steroids in the Olympic Games. In the course of time most of organizations connected with professional sport and competitions also abandoned anabolic steroids. Still, steroids are alive and widely used nowadays. They are safer for human organism and have stronger effect. It is easier to decide on the dosage needed for one or another sportsman according to his weight, state of health and the results he wants to achieve.

In the course of time the characteristics of anabolic steroids were investigated in great details and nowadays due to these numerous experiments steroids have become extremely effective and safe for our organism.

Nowadays steroids are widely used among sportsmen, especially by bodybuilders as these drugs help to form attractive form of body in a short period of time. There is a great variety of different steroid types available for their users; each of them has its own characteristics and special effects. Anadrol (oxymetholone), Anavar (oxandrolone), Lasix (furosemide), Masteron (drostanolone propionate), Sustanon (testosterone blend), Testosterone cypionate and what not. These are just a few names of steroids available nowadays.
