Nutrition: An Important Key to Your Success

Healthy eating is essential to personal success and peak performance. Wikipedia defines a healthy diet as “the practice of making choices about what to eat with the intent of improving or maintaining good health.” Improving and maintaining good health is key to ensuring you are at the top of your game. Here are a few guidelines when planning a healthy diet
.
Timing is important when planning your meals. In order to avoid hunger pangs that can often lead to unhealthy snacking you should plan meals and snacks throughout the day. It is easier to follow through with this when it becomes a routine. A great way to plan your meals for the day is breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, mid-afternoon snack, supper and evening snack. You may find it easier to schedule those meals and snacks into your day. This ensures that your blood glucose levels remain even throughout the day leaving no room for the sudden dips and cravings for unhealthy food. All meals and snacks should be within your healthy eating guidelines for your age, gender and size. You can find resources for healthy eating online.
The second key is to have nutritional food handy. Many times we reach for the unhealthy foods because they are handy – just open a bag or wrapper and there is your snack. Spend time once a week cutting up some vegetables and fruit for your fridge. Make it a fun family or couple time. Make your snacks the night before so they are ready for the day. You can even purchase ready-made healthy snacks from your local grocery stores – vegetable or fruit trays – snacks of whole grain crackers and tuna, yogurt parfaits and more. Healthy choices are being made more available at restaurants as well. Find the way that works well for you.

Another essential aspect to eating well is finding things you enjoy eating. Try different healthy foods and different ways to prepare them. If you do not care for a certain food – find an alternative. To follow a healthy diet you must enjoy the foods you are eating. Do you have a favourite food? Find different ways to prepare it – that way you do not get bored with it. There are many recipes and ideas to explore on the internet. Keep an eye on the nutritional information when choosing recipes.
Any food that is sold in grocery store has a nutritional label. Take a look to see how much of each nutrient is in the foods you are choosing. Another important label is the ingredient label. Each of the ingredients are listed according to largest to smallest portion in the prepared food. If you find the ingredient label and the first listed ingredient is sugar then that is the largest ingredient in that food. It is much better to find foods with nutritional ingredients listed first.

While changing an unhealthy habit is not always easy – it takes very little time to start feeling better with better nutritional choices. It is important to note that we sometimes “fall off the wagon” and indulge in something unhealthy. Do not let this deter you from continuing with your healthy diet. In fact, sometimes if you deny yourself these foods, they can begin to be a source of rumination. It is okay to have an occasional small portion of sweets such as cake or chocolate. If you find you have over-indulged in unhealthy choices, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and remind yourself of the reasons you began to eat healthy in the first place. Do not be too hard on yourself if you indulge – let it go and move on.

Healthy eating leads to a happier healthier you. Having a healthier you, leads to wellbeing in many different aspects of your life including relationship, family, career and business. In order to remain at peak performance, a healthy diet is an essential key to success.
