Why Social Wellness is the Key to Healthy Aging

As anyone dealing with the onset of old age knows, physical health is not the only element of healthy aging. Of course, you cannot have a healthy retirement if you're plagued by all sorts of diseases; however, it normally takes much more than physical health for your aging process to truly classify as healthy." The key to healthy aging is wellness that all-important state that encompasses physical, economic, mental and social wellness.

Old age is a time of change and, quite often, most of this change is unwelcome. One by one, our loved ones and lifetime friends begin to succumb to old age or associated diseases. Our children and grand children grow up and move on to bigger and better things, often leaving us completely alone. Coping with these changes is an important element of healthy aging and, in this article, I am going to show you how you can overcome these issues and still have a healthy retirement.

First of all, do not make the mistake of limiting your social life to your lifetime partner and a circle of close friends. Just because you are 60 doesn't mean that you can't go out there, meet new people, pick up new hobbies and get involved with the rest of the world. One of the best ways to deal with the pressure of old age is to keep working even past the retirement age. For example, consider running your own business or working as a consultant. Although this may not be the dream retirement you had in mind, it will save you from the nightmare of spending your days locked alone inside your house.

The second method of psychologically healthy aging is to get involved in social events. Conferences, exhibitions and movie premiers are always taking place somewhere see if you can't visit some of them and maybe meet some new people along the way. Getting involved in charity work is always a good idea, as you will work with like-minded individuals who are passionate about what they do. Try to remain as dynamic and socially active as possible, because avoiding social isolation is one of the keys to both healthy aging and old-age wellness.

Another popular healthy aging method is to spend some of the money you have saved up and go vacation someplace you've never been before. Constant inflow of new experiences and memorable events is an important element of healthy aging. Without them, your mind becomes stale and you start to dwell on things that happened to you 20-30 years ago simply because there's nothing exciting or interesting happening in your life anymore. Acquiring new experiences even if you are well past the retirement age is indispensable to healthy aging and wellness.

As you can see, healthy aging involves considerably more than simply exercising for half an hour a day. Unfortunately, most healthy aging guides nowadays omit that all-important attribute of wellness the combination of social, economic, mental and physical welfare. Somehow, it is assumed that you are able to cope with the pressures of growing older simply by jogging for 30 minutes a day or exercising at your local gym until you're blue in the face. Of course, it does not work like that, and no amount of muscle will help you bear the burden of social isolation in your retirement.

Therefore, if you are looking for a key to healthy aging, look no further than your circle of friends and social acquaintances. Ask yourself are they still going to be there for me in 10 or 20 years? Or will I face my old age physically fit but completely alone? Remember when it comes to healthy aging, physical health does not equal wellness.
