What Jojoba Oil Can Do For Your Skin

Now, I'm not one of those people who tends to go around calling something a "miracle product." I think that green tea has some amazing properties, and apple cider vinegar has a lot of wonderful uses, but I don't think I've ever referred to them as "miracles." However, if I were going to call anything a miracle product, it would probably be jojoba oil. Because this inexpensive yellow oil can do amazing things.

Uses of Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil has been used by Native Americans for centuries. In the 17th Century, it was recorded that Native Americans used this oil to treat cuts, lesions, and burns, to condition the skin, to soothe, and even to cook with. Why jojoba instead of some other oil? Because jojoba oil is very, very different from most vegetable-based oils. In fact, it's not an oil at all, but a type of liquid wax that is incredibly similar in structure to our body's own oils, called sebum. This similarity is what makes jojoba oil such a perfect product for human skin.

Jojoba oil is natural, it's cheap, and it's amazingly effective. Non-comodogenic (which means it doesn't clog pores) and hypoallergenic, it is almost a perfect beauty product. It doesn't break out your skin, cause a reaction, or carry with it any adverse side effects. All of which makes it incredibly useful for a variety of different applications, such as:

1. Removing makeup. Most makeup removers are oil-based (which makes them inappropriate for acne prone skin) or harsh and drying. Jojoba oil is a perfectly gentle makeup remover, removing all traces of eye makeup and foundation with just one quick swipe.

2. Moisturizing skin. While its application is generally reserved for the face, jojoba oil is an incredible effective moisturizer for the skin. Without clogging pores, causing breakouts, or irritating sensitive skin, jojoba oil penetrates deeply and well, helping to treat and prevent dry, flaky skin. Use a few drops on its own in the evening, or mix one or two drops in with your usual moisturizer or body lotion.

3. Reduces oil production. This may seem completely counter intuitive, but that doesn't make it any less true: putting jojoba oil on your face can help to minimize oily skin. Hate that shiny forehead in your internet dating profile photo? A few weeks' use of jojoba oil can trick your skin into believing that it's producing enough oil, and cut down on sebum production. While your skin will look a bit oily right after applying the oil, it absorbs surprisingly well, leaving relatively little shine behind. Want to be totally shine-free during the day? Reserve your jojoba oil use for bed-time, when it doesn't matter if your look a bit oily.

4. Acne and clogged pore treatment. Because it's so similar to human sebum, jojoba oil can be a very effective acne treatment. Adding the oil to your skin encourages the free flow of sebum; and while this sounds like a bad thing it's actually a very good one. Blocked pores do not allow oils to flow, cleanse, and replenish normally. Jojoba oil can help your pores to do this properly, and is amazingly effective at cleaning out blocked, dirty pores. You'll see the difference after little more than a week.

Moisturizing hair. Unless you're a used car salesman, you probably don't like the idea of oily-looking hair. But the oil in jojoba oil is actually wonderful for your hair; and because it's such a light oil, it's quite non-greasy when used in moderation. For extra moisture, add some jojoba oil to your regular conditioner, or smooth a few drops into wet hair before blow-drying.

Treating frizz. Tend to have problems with frizzy hair (as evidenced by the Doctor Frankenstein look in many of your internet dating profile photos)? Jojoba oil is a natural, cheap, and effective de-frizzing serum. Simply rub a few drops between clean hands and smooth gently over frizzy hair. Unlike most frizz serums, jojoba oil is alcohol free, moisturizing, and doesn't cause build up.

When a product is this cheap, effective, and natural, I can't help but get excited about it. One 8 oz. bottle of jojoba oil will run you about $15, last for six months, and replace up to 50% of the beauty products you currently have sitting in your bathroom cabinet. It may not be a miracle, per se, but... how many other all-natural products can do so much?
