When Nicotine Won't Let You Quit Smoking
You may be like some smokers that report their main addiction to smoking isn't the physical act of smoking a cigarette, but to the nicotine that is in cigarettes. For smokers like this, certain stop smoking aides will not help them quit smoking.
Nicotine is a habit forming drug found in cigarettes. Nicotine is a drug like cocaine or heroin. Some claim the addiction to nicotine is as strong, if not stronger than cocaine or heroin. Others will refute that theory. But, nonetheless, nicotine is a habit forming drug. One difference that nicotine has from cocaine and heroin is that it is legal to use. Just because smoking cigarettes is legal doesn't mean you should do it. And, if you are a smoker, it is time for you to quit this horrible addictive habit.
The reason you want to keep smoking may be because your body is telling you that it needs the drug nicotine. To quit smoking means you have to face the physical and mental withdrawals from nicotine. This may not be easy, but, it is an obstacle you have to get past in order to become a non-smoker.
Nicotine is carried through the smoke in your lungs into your body. The drug nicotine attaches to your bloodstream where it is carried throughout your body.
The heart, hormones, blood vessels, brain and metabolism are only a small sample of the parts and actions of your body that are affected by nicotine.
Smoking cigarettes provides you with nicotine, nicotine acts as a mood enhancing drug. So, after you get nicotine in your system you have a good feeling. Nicotine may calm your nerves or help you relax. However, nicotine can also make you more tense and unrelaxed if your body doesn't get the nicotine it craves. This makes it almost impossible for some people to quit smoking cold turkey.
Once you have put out your last cigarette it takes about 4 days for your body to get rid of all the nicotine in your system. This may prove to be a very long and difficult 4 days for some smokers. While your body is ridding itself of nicotine your mind and body are screaming for the drug. Withdrawal symptoms kick in and some smokers cannot handle the sometimes overwhelming physical and mental cravings.
To know what you will face when quitting the drug nicotine may help you to get through those first several days. If you know what to expect, you won't be surprised when it happens and you will be able to remind yourself it will end shortly.
Some common withdrawal symptoms of nicotine are dizziness, sleep disturbances, frustration, and intense anger or agitation and headaches. The severity of your symptoms may depend on the severity of your addiction.
It may take you several attempts t quit smoking to get it right. You may find on your first try that you were ill prepared to deal with the withdrawal symptoms of quitting nicotine. But, your second attempt may be better because you will know what to expect. On the other hand, some smokers are able to quit their first try. The ability to quit smoking varies for each person. Do not get discouraged if it takes you more than one try to quit smoking. You may have to take several shots before you finally hit the bulls eye and quit completely.
