The Fireplace Screen: Is It a Necessary Luxury?
The fireplace has always been part of the American home. Back when there were still no electric heating systems that people could turn to, it was the one that provided families with the warmth that is most needed during the cold winter days and nights. This is the place that housed the fire that was a good source of heat. Today, however, the fireplace is seen in an altogether different light than from how it was used before electric heating systems came. It is now seen as a beautifying aspect of a home; more of a luxury than a necessity.
Seeing as to how more and more people are now catering to technologys offer of heat source through heating systems, it actually comes as no surprise why fireplaces have been relegated to such roles. Granted, they do have decorative potential. Personally, though, I feel that they are more fitting for a functional use rather than a decorative one. I say this because I believe that such a simple setting as the fireplace can bring the family together.
I still remember scenes from movies I have seen wherein families huddle together in the fireplace room, drinking cups of coffee or hot chocolate and talking while trying to get warm from the cold that the winter season brings. The setting of a place, rather than its actual use, is one that I believe contributes to this image. With this vision in mind, I come to think of one of its accessories, the fireplace screen.
The fireplace screen, from the term itself, is a screen used to place just in front of where the fire might be. This is to protect the room from the embers and the soot that the fire may emit. Aside from its safety aspect, it can also have a very nice decorative touch. In fact, I have known one person to say that the screen is the one that makes the fireplace a beautiful addition to the home, rather than just a functional addition.
But what really constitutes the use of the fireplace? Is the something we should still cater to, knowing that much no longer using it for its functionality? Or is it something that we should cater to based on the decorative aspect that many have seen it to bring about in the fireplace? Put into one simple statement, perhaps the question should be: is it really a necessary luxury?
I believe that the fireplace screen is one accessory that can most beautify the fireplace. Thus, in the respect where the fireplace would no longer be used for its functionality, then the screen is indeed a necessary luxury. Most people who decide to switch to heating systems find it mostly a bother to try and remove an already established fireplace, so they try to make the most out of it by looking at its decorative aspect and the beautification that it can bring to the home. For this purpose, the screen is not only a crucial consideration, but a most effective addition. If chosen carefully, it can enhance the look of the fireplace, as well as its surroundings. Thus, decisions should be made carefully in selecting a screen; considerations should be made on the size, the material and the surrounding decor.
I would like the fireplace to be the constant source of heat for the season, but facts are facts. As more and more fireplaces are now turned to home decor, I believe that the fireplace screen would more than just enough to make it work.
