Comparing Traditional And Modern Bedroom Furniture

If it's time to change the look in your bedroom, you will probably find yourself visiting traditional and modern furniture stores for a look that fits your tastes and lifestyle. But many people do not know the differences between traditional and modern bedroom furniture. It is true, modern bedroom furniture typically has simpler lines while traditional furniture tends to be more ornate, but there are may more differences to consider before choosing which style you want for your new bedroom furniture.

Beds And Mattresses

With just one look, it's easy to tell if a bed is part of a traditional or modern set. A traditional bed usually will have a metal frame, along with a box spring, mattress and a headboard made out of wood or metal. Depending on the style of the bed, you may also find a footboard at the foot of the bed.

On the other hand, a contemporary bed usually consists of a simple platform that you place the mattress on top. Some styles come with a footboard and the headboard is made out of wood or covered in fabric. Modern bedroom furniture sets may even come with a headboard that can recline. It's possible to find a bed with side tables attached to either side if you don't have the space for nightstands.

While shopping in modern furniture stores, ask your salesperson if you should consider buying a special mattress for your new bed. Modern platform beds may require a different type of mattress since there won't be a box spring underneath. Most modern furniture stores should have the correct types of mattresses so you can test them out before you buy one.

Dressers And Armoires

A modern dresser can have the same shape as a dresser from a more traditional line of furniture. The difference is in the details. A traditional dresser may have ornate drawer pulls or even carvings into the drawers. On the other hand, a modern dresser will be smooth, with sleek and simple lines. The handles on the drawers will be simple or the dresser may not have them at all.

An armoire is half closet, half dresser. They usually have two or three drawers on the bottom and two doors that close to hide either clothing or electronics. Armoires are the perfect piece of furniture for a small room with a small closet. If you don't see any at the modern furniture stores you visit, ask your salesperson. They may be able to special order an armoire for you.

Accessories Like Lamps And Artwork

A room's details are in the accessories and traditional and modern furniture stores are the perfect places to find accents that make your room. A modern lamp will be sleek and simple with a wood or silver tone metal base, while traditional lamps may be more ornate. Modern lampshades can be made out of fabric, sturdy paper or glass and can be round or square.

Modern artwork and traditional artwork differ greatly as well. While traditional artwork is usually a scenic picture or painting, modern artwork uses clean lines and may not have a recognizable subject. The frame surrounding a piece of modern artwork will be simple and most likely made out of wood or metal. It's easy to find pieces of modern art that's designed to be grouped together on your wall and the salespeople can help you pick out a group of artwork and lamps that flatter your new modern bedroom furniture.

A set of traditional or modern bedroom furniture can last you for years to come if you look for a set that's timeless, yet contemporary. If you can find modern furniture stores with knowledgeable sales people, you'll be able to find a set you love with accessories that add to the beauty of your new room.
