A Talent For Fitted Kitchens That I Never Knew I Had
Having never had much of an interest in DIY or home improvements before, I was put in a bit of a situation recently when I was told that the electrics and the plumbing in my kitchen were in dire need of repair. In fact the news wasn't even that good, I was told in no uncertain terms that if I didn't replace both then I'd risk further deterioration which could lead to accidents. I should seriously consider starting from scratch and getting a new fitted kitchen. It was time to roll up my sleeves and get stuck into some good hard graft!
Well that's how I tell the story now. Of course at the time I didn't have a clue what to do or where to go. I didn't have the faintest idea about wiring, plumbing or fitted kitchens. I stood in the doorway looking at the ruin that was my kitchen trying to picture the possibilities but only able to see a series of 'manly' tasks ahead of me which I already knew were doomed to failure.
If this all seems a little pessimistic, it's for a good reason. My previous attempts at any home improvements, DIY or, if I'm being completely honest, anything that involves strength and the use of power tools, have all been disastrous. My shelves are never straight and they tend to remove themselves from the wall shortly after I've put anything on them. If I'm ever required to use a spanner, rather than a tool that can be used in delicate operations, it resembles a hammer in my hands and I leave behind scratched walls and pipes as evidence of my incompetence.
Luckily I do know people who are very good with such things and after a few days of stressing over my next move I began to make some phone calls. The plumbing was taken care of quite quickly. An uncle sorted out the problems in a weekend for me, at a family rate of course. He also agreed to come back if I needed anything adjusting if I did choose to go down the fitted kitchens root.
The new wiring took a bit longer but a few weeks later that too was taken care of and I was back up and running, so to speak, and all without the risk of electrocution or flooding. I could have stopped there but I knew that would be the wrong thing to do and so typical of me. I had to finish what had been started so I logged on to the computer and began searching for fitted kitchens.
I was amazed at the range of products and the different styles that were available in all the fitted kitchens websites and catalogues I looked at and became completely wrapped up in the process of looking for things. Maybe, I thought, fitted kitchens were my area of DIY expertise.
After serious consideration I decided to rip out everything that was already there and buy everything new. It made sense as I knew I never do it again and so I need to be sure everything was in good order and would last for the next hundred years, or at least until I moved into another house, which I couldn't imagine happening for a while yet.
So I chose the new color; red with grey and black trim and ordered all the new units with a glossy finish and chrome handles. The work tops were heavy polished granite and the floor was made of similar colored floor tiles. As fitted kitchens go, I thought I'd done a good job and when all the little extras were in place, espresso machine, juicer and wine rack, it looked thoroughly modern.
There was just one more thing. When ordering the units I was amazed to find that I could include a TV screen and DVD player in the design of the door. Now I can watch my favorite films while I'm doing my next project; learning to cook!
