Beautiful And Comfortable Ottomans

There are some things that every room needs - things that you might not even think of as being vital to the way that your room looks. No matter what type of space you have in your home, beautiful and comfortable ottomans can be just what you are looking for to spice up your decor or to add needed comfort and function to any room in your home.

An ottoman is an accessory piece of furniture resembling an armless and backless seat or bench. Most commonly they are padded or upholstered in a variety of materials including leather, cotton, vinyl, brocade, tapestry, wool and woven rug patterns. Often used as a stool or footrest they can also serve as tables and storage. Other names for the ottoman include footstool, hassock and pouf.
The ottoman, as the piece of furniture we know today, is believed to have become popularized in England around the early 1800’s although it is renowned for its Middle Eastern origins. Traditionally, an ottoman is something that is used to put your feet up on while you sit on a couch or a chair. They were usually made of wood or sometimes leather, and provided a needed respite from a hard day of work.

For More than Just Your Feet

In today’s contemporary home, ottomans are much more than just places to put up your feet. They are pieces of furniture that can be either a central focal point in your décor or a finishing accent. More than decorative, ottomans add a taste of comfort to your home environment. In the past, they were just big enough for you to set your feet upon, and not much else. However, today, many ottomans are big enough for you to put your whole body on. Whether in the living room, family room, or bedroom, an ottoman can be a fantastic way for you to add extra seating and beauty at the same time.

Most of the larger ottomans now come with matching chairs. For instance, if you are buying a big and comfortable chair for your home, you might have an ottoman that fits right up against it to make a longer chair - or a chair that you can lounge around in. As opposed to a one-piece lounge sofa, this type of chair-and-ottoman set allows you to shift it around the room depending on the occasion - to watch TV, sleep a little more comfortably on the couch, or as extra seating for one or more guests. Ottomans can also double as a coffee or game table.

Versatile Storage Solutions

Not only that, but some ottomans come with storage already built in, which means that you do not have to worry about finding a home for that extra stuff - you can simply use your ottoman, and have it right there waiting for you in the room where you use the items. The newest trend in beautiful and comfortable ottomans is storage. Today’s ottoman can be as large as a small sofa and they often come with side compartments or hinged tops for easy access to hidden storage.

The interior is usually empty, which means that you can put just about anything in it that you would like. Many people choose to put blankets for their living room or bedrooms into the storage space in their ottomans. They might also use them for storage for extra pillows, movies or DVDs, or even video game controllers and games. Additionally you can put things in the ottoman that you only use sparingly -- like seasonal decorations or cleaning equipment.

A Perfect Fit for Any Room

When you are choosing ottomans for both beauty and comfort, there are several things that you are going to want to remember. First of all, try to choose an ottoman that fits the style of your home. The larger the piece of furniture, the more attention it is going to attract and you do not want a white elephant sitting in the middle of your living room! If you are not sure what type of style you have, try browsing home magazines, furniture catalogs and online lifestyle sites for some ideas.

Another consideration is the shape of your ottoman. The larger types are usually square or rectangular although modern décor frequently features a large circular ottoman as a centerpiece amongst the sofas, substituted for a traditional glass coffee table. You can find a shape that fits your room - round, oval, square or rectangular. A good idea is to re-arrange your furniture in the proposed configuration, using boxes to approximate the ottoman. If the space feels too cramped or too sparse, try other arrangements or reconsider the size and shape of your ottoman.

If you are adding the piece to an existing furniture collection, do not worry if you cannot find an exact match in the upholstery. Ottomans work well as complementary pieces in a similar color and fabric family - try adding a pattern that complements solids or a solid complementing a pattern. They also work well as contrasting pieces such as adding leather to a textured fabric ensemble or throwing in a metal or wicker ottoman with a leather sofa and chair.

Regardless of the type you choose, go ahead and experiment as ottomans offer an easy and inexpensive way to add comfort, function and beauty to any room in your home.
