American shutters

Shutters are perhaps one of the few timeless architectural extensions that are available today, no matter how modern a house looks; all it takes is a shutter to add that homely touch. Traditionally shutters have been designed using wood, however newer shutters are designed from a combination of new age materials like aluminium, fibreglass and a combination of other materials like plastics. If you are looking for some help and guidance on using shutters in your house then this article is meant to be a guide to help you out.

The first step is to understand that not all shutters are the same, depending on their area of application shutters are defined as exterior or interior shutters. If you plan to use shutters within the house then such shutters are termed as interior shutters, however a majority of shutters used today are used externally in windows and doors. The first thing you need to do is to understand what your requirements are, if you are planning on buying only exterior shutters, internal shutters or both.

If you are planning on buying shutters for your interiors then the best option is to go for wooden shutters, wooden shutters are elegant, and have no trouble blending in with any décor, in fact the reason why wooden shutters are so popular with people is because they can be painted over, given different finishes or simply be used by applying a single coat of varnish, without a doubt if you are planning on using shutters for your interiors then you should use wooden shutters. The best shutters available today are made in the US, and are exported to various parts of the world. In fact shutters were first popularised in the US and have now slowly spread throughout the world.

If you are considering exterior shutters then there are a few things to keep in mind, exterior shutters will be subject to weather conditions and will undergo the same treatment the exterior of your house bears, if you are living in a climate that is prone to frequent rains and damp weather, then you should consider using shutters that are made from PVC or fibreglass. This will ensure that you don’t end up spending money for wooden shutters that eventually get disfigured due to frequent exposure to water and snow. You can also choose to buy shutters that are made from new age materials like fibre glass, or aluminium. However the best option is to usually go with shutters that are blend of one or more new age materials, this ensures that you have lightweight, yet flexible shutters for your home exteriors.

Another factor to keep in mind while choosing external shutters is to think about their decorative value, today there are so many different styles and colours available, that depending on you individual choice you can easily find shutters that match the exteriors of your house. The only thing to keep in mind is the climate and the amount of wear and tear the shutters are expected to bear.

Choosing the right material for your shutters

As mentioned earlier in the article, shutters are made of a variety of materials, from traditional materials like wood to new age materials like fibreglass. Today choice is not an issue the only limitation in choosing a shutter is, the price, the area of application and the style. If you are looking for something that will last for a long time and price is not a constraint then fibreglass shutters are the best option. However if you prefer more traditional shutters then wood is the medium you should consider, similarly if durability is your prime concern then PVC based shutters are a good idea. At the end of the day a shutter should be a blend of all the qualities you want.
