Blinds; How To Choose The Right Variety For Your Home
For those decorating and even the interior designer the problem of how to cover the windows is always prevalent. This decision is made difficult by the plethora of options on the market, curtains, blinds and shutters are all available and if used correctly can create a stylish and elegant home. Ultimately window coverings must be able to let in light, have some form of thermal property and also provide privacy for the homeowner, the perfect solution; blinds.
Blinds come in a myriad of different styles and have the benefit of having complete light control, bespoke fitting and chic elegance that is hard to find with any other form of window covering. But how do those who are redecorating choose blinds?
What are the key decisions and thinking processes when choosing this form of window dressing? Understandably consumers are often overwhelmed once they have looked at the options; hopefully the following information will be able to give designers an idea of the considerations that will help making this choice easier.
First and foremost it is important to ask yourself exactly what you need the blind to do. Will you need the blinds to allow light in throughout the day? Whether you will need the blind to completely block the light, for instance someone who works nights may require such a task. By following such a process it is possible to limit the choices and hence make the decision over which types of blinds to use that little bit easier.
Secondly it is important to assess your own privacy needs. For instance a number of blinds will allow light in throughout the day by due to the angle of the slats will effectively create complete privacy from the outside. Privacy is a very individual requirement and should be considered at depth when selecting blinds for the home.
Looking at the current decor of the room, or even the planned design after redecoration is essential. Ultimately you will want the blind to match the decor, for example a room that is country style and homely will not particularly suit minimalistic blinds. In the same vein it is important to select blinds for each room on an individual basis; while it can work out cheaper to buy in bulk, design will suffer if this course of action is followed.
Ultimately you want to select blinds along the lines of shape, texture and colour in order for them to compliment the existing style of a room. With blinds manufactured from wood, vinyl, aluminium, fabric and faux wood the choice of texture and style is immense.
It is also important to consider the function of the room where a blind is to be installed. In some rooms this is not especially important although in both the bathroom and kitchen it is unadvisable to install wooden blinds; in highly humid conditions this form of window covering has a tendency to warp. In this instance a faux wood blind will typically be far more suitable.
The final consideration is the size of blinds, whether the style of the room needs a blind that extends past the window edge or fits snugly into the frame is entirely based upon the designer's personal preference. Remember however that a fitted blind will save far more space than one that sits off the window by a couple of inches. If space is a major issue it is now possible to obtain windows with the blinds built in, this keeps the usable space at a maximum whilst also reducing the need for cleaning.
Hopefully this article has put forward the key considerations when choosing blinds for the home. By taking an approach that assesses the decor of each room individually it should be possible to install window coverings that compliment the interior design.
