Choosing Window Blinds; The Key Decisions
Window blinds are an attractive and stylish design option for those decorating their homes that may wish for something a little different. One of the most popular varieties of window blinds are venetian, when choosing this type of blind however there are a myriad of considerations that must be made should they add an elegant facet to a home.
Blinds will create style and privacy in nearly every room in the house, but to create a unique look to each room it is important to vary both designs and materials to achieve a home that would look great in any interior design magazine.
The first step when redecorating is to consider the current condition of the window coverings already present. Blinds may already be in place although curtains and shutters may also be used. If these window coverings are in a good condition already new ones may not be needed, although if they are damaged or even just looking a little tired it may be advisable to go shopping.
At the very least it is important to give blinds a thorough clean when redecorating, toxins and dirt build up on window coverings over the years and hence cleaning them is always a good idea.
If the decision is made to purchase new window blinds there is a decision making process that should be followed. First of all you should consider how many blinds you will need; this will include assessing each of the windows for size and shape. A house that has a uniform set of windows may allow you to bulk buy a particular style of blind although if your home has different sizes and styles of window a more bespoke approach will have to be followed.
Window blinds are versatile and are available in large variety of different colours and materials meaning that no matter the intended decor for your home you will be able to find a window covering to match. The most commonly used variety of blinds are manufactured from aluminium and vinyl, whilst in terms of colours cream and white, as well as brushed aluminium are used wholesale.
That is not to say that these are the only options open to homeowners; with modern manufacturing processes and design there are now all manner of materials being used for blinds, fabric can bring an interesting and warm feel to a home whilst solid wood has a classical elegance that is hard to find with any other form of window covering.
Different materials however do have advantages and disadvantages. While aluminium and vinyl are affordable in some cases they can look cheap if used incorrectly, additionally the thermal properties of these materials are limited. Wooden blinds on the other hand will always look expensive but that is usually because they are. Additionally wooden blinds are not suitable in rooms such as the bathroom and kitchen as high levels of humidity can make them warp over time.
In terms of pricing options, naturally bespoke custom made blinds will cost more than those bought off the shelf. Some argue that the bespoke variety will last longer but there is nothing to say that shop bought varieties will not last as long. For a unique design statement however the only option is to go bespoke.
Hopefully this article has highlighted some of the different varieties of window blinds available on the market and how the choice can make or break the design of a home. Ultimately a detailed and careful decision making process will yield the best results.
