5 Important Tips To Burglar-Proofing Your Home

When it comes to protecting your home and family, it’s important to observe a few simple guidelines that will help to ensure the safety of both. Many people wonder why a burglar chooses one house over another, but there isn’t always a clear answer. As individuals, the very best that we can do is to try and make our home safe by keeping burglars out.

Lock up. The first and best thing that you can do to protect your family from an unlawful intruder is to lock all of your doors and windows. It’s surprising how many people still leave the doors to their home unlocked and the keys inside of their vehicle, but it’s true nonetheless.

Light your lawn. If you need to see outside, it’s important that you are able to do so without having to go out of the house. A motion light or bright porch light will provide a way for the exterior of your home to be easily seen by both you and your neighbors. A burglar doesn’t want to be seen, which is why a quality light is a home essential that you can’t afford to be without.

Curb appeal. It may sound strange that making your home look appealing from the curb can actually help to prevent a burglary, but it’s true. Some of the simplest methods used to spruce up a home’s exterior can be used to deter break-ins. First and foremost, remove any tools and/or clutter from the yard and lock them away in a storage area. A burglar can use almost anything to break into a home or window, which is why yard cleanup is a smart idea. Next, trimming trees, plants or hedges that may obstruct your view from inside the home is a must. Double check the locks on your windows and doors, along with hinges, to make sure that everything is working properly.

Get a home security system. Whether you prefer an actual security system or a timeless classic, the barking dog, having some type of warning system will help to deter potential burglars. A barking dog, an alarm or both can help to keep your family safe.

Ask yourself one question. How many ways could someone get into your home? With the answer in mind, make the necessary upgrades or repairs so that entering your home without permission would be a tedious task.

Now that you know several ways to improve the safety of your home and family, it’s important to put your new plans into motion and get started on the necessary renovations. When you are away from home, always remember to have someone to maintain your lawn and have your mail and/or daily newspaper delivery stopped or have someone that you trust to pick it up for you. One of the most inviting signs to a burglar is the obvious absence of the homeowner. Whether you live in the smallest of towns, the largest of cities or somewhere in between, you can’t put a price on the value of your own peace of mind and the well-being of those you love.
