Decorate Your Bedroom In The Contemporary Style
The contemporary style consists of minimalism - not a lot of clutter, and not a lot of color, just black, white or beige, to give each room, including the bedroom, a calm, relaxing ambience.
Interior design styles of the past have been big on oversized furniture, and lots of it, as well as lots and lots of clutter. The contemporary style is a minimalist one: colors in black, white and beige, bare floors and walls, and a minimum of ornamentation.
The bed
The bed is the largest piece of furniture in the bedroom, and so you must choose it with care. Not only should it be a piece of decoration, but it also must be comfortable! The bed frame should match the rest of the furniture in the room - or at least not detract from it. (Use your own judgement as to what kind of mattress you'll get for the bed.)
Elegant bed frames made of steel are the best sellers right now. They can be all steel, or mix a bit of hardwood in with them. The frame should have clean lines and a minimum of ornament. There are plenty of styles to choose from, including bedsteads with bookcases built right in to them, if you like reading in bed.
The rest of the furniture
If you've got built-in closets you may or may not need dressers, bureaus, armoires or wardrobes, or an entertainment center for your television and music necessities, but here metal has not replaced the traditional designs constructed from wood - either real wood or synthetic material with a wooden veneer. Bookcases in a bedroom? Why not, if you enjoy reading?
The walls
If your bedroom is on the small side, consider using a large mirror or two, which gives it the illusion of size. A light wall color will set off the rest of the room nicely. The walls should ideally be bare for the most part, with just one or two pieces of art on a wall or two - more than that and the artwork disappears and is not noticeable.
Windows
Windows exist to let fresh air and sunlight into a particular room. They must therefore be decorative, as well as functional - to keep intruders out of your home. Depending on the size of the windows, you'll want shutters or blinds for privacy, as well as draperies to open or close as the spirit moves you. The size of your windows determines whether you'll have curtains or draperies - draperies extend all the way to the floor. Valances - sweeps of curtain that go over the window rod to hide it - in minamalist decor, just choose a nice decorative metal rod instead.
The floor
Repeat the theme of color with your floor - hardwood floors are attractive but can be cool on the feet in winter...beige or white carpeting makes the room look larger, black would make the room look smaller.
Let there be light
With a minimalist decor, there's much that can be done with lighting - from stylish lamps to overhead fixtures. Let in sunshine from the windows during the day, and read with bedside lamps during the night. If you don't want bedside tables flanking either side of the bed, lights can be affixed to the headboard.
Choose each of your elements well, and your contemporary bedroom will be pleasing to the eye day or night.
