Tackling Bathroom Remodel Yourself
Ask any home remodeling expert and they will tell you that the two most expensive rooms to remodel in just about any home are the kitchen and the bathroom. That is why so many people attempt to save some money by remodeling their own bathroom. It can look so easy to make the changes to your bathroom that you plan on making when you are a novice looking the situation over. While it is true that bathroom remodeling can be extremely expensive it is not usually the cost of the materials that makes the job so high cost. More often than not a high bathroom remodeling bill comes from the intense hours of labor involved in doing the job right and making sure that the changes made do not turn out to cause damage to the home later on.
Your shower and your toilet do not require electronic components to function properly unless you have a higher end unit that uses special water pumps to move the water. But for the most part the important components of your bathroom are not complicated to understand but where the problems arise is in understanding all of the work necessary to correctly install plumbing and appreciating the problems that can arise when plumbing is not done exactly right. Water can be like a small child that goes unattended for any period of time. After a while you start to wonder how in the world it got into the places it got itself into. The difference is that water will do slow and deteriorating damage over many years in small and hidden places while a child is a whirlwind that can be dealt with on the spot. Incorrectly installed plumbing that is allowed to leak not only lessens your water pressure but it can rot the wood in your walls, leak onto unseen places in your ceilings and walls, and leave mold that can cause thousands of dollars of damage.
The lessons in all of this are to be conscious of the detailed work needed to complete a proper bathroom remodeling job because water does not care if this is your first plumbing job. If water can find a way out of the pipes it will find it and cause problems. This is why many people that do their own bathroom remodeling still insist on having a professional do the plumbing work and tackle the rest of the job themselves. There are so many ways to remodel a bathroom that the combination and possibilities are endless. Aside from the plumbing there are new mirrors to be installed, new vanities to be put into place, and potentially new walls to construct or old walls to move out of the way.
Any large remodeling job requires planning and a bathroom remodeling is no different. You do not need to be a licensed architect to create effective drawings of the changes you want to make, you just need to be able to create drawings you can work from. You may want to invest in some of the easy to use remodeling software that is available that will allow you to create a virtual view of your bathroom and then allow you to see how your changes would look. From there the software will help you create drawings, and in some cases even a materials list, that you can work from to make sure you get the job done right the first time. In the world of remodeling, considering the tight budgets that are out there, the first time may be the only time you get.
