Perhaps the most popular and the classic form of this device is the one that can be hung over a door knob. It can also be used on railing fences or other such openings on a house or an establishment. Still, some people think that this type looks too messy. So, if you like a neat type of lock, you can try for a wall mount kind. Aside from being neat, it is also easier to place in position. You only have to find a firm and flat surface, such as walls, doors, or desk posts, and then you mount it there.

Aside from this categorization, this device can also be classified on the way on how it is to be locked or opened. It has three types. The first type is the most common and the classic: the key type. This type of lock can only be unlocked by its corresponding key. What makes this type convenient for families is that each family member has his or her own key. So, each one can come home any time and not have any problems opening the door. The other two types would involve the use of dials and combination.

These types are more preferable to use especially when you find that keys can be hassle as they can be lost or misplaced. The combination of these types of locks are in a series of numbers, letters, or digits, which can range from 4 to up to 8 characters. The combination will be surely secure if you properly install the lock. Of the three types, the key type is the most affordable.

This device is usually made of either durable plastic or of metal. It is made to stand different weather conditions. Some may even have rubber grommets to protect it from damage from moisture. Those with electronic locks can be hard to use and can be more prone to malfunctions.
