Homeowners Face Water Damage Cleanup Hazards When Mold Removal Is Neglected
A flooding incident could be cumbersome for homeowners, particularly if it resulted to water damage to the structure and other properties. Water removal would be the foremost thing in the homeowner's mind at this point, and all efforts would be focused in these activities. However, some important aspects could be overlooked in the hustle and bustle of the moment, items like checking for molds.
Water-damaged homes have a higher possibility for mold infestation, and neglecting proper mold removal would put the homeowner and other inhabitants of the house at greater risks.
Some people do not consider mold removal as a top priority in water damage restoration. What they do not realize is that molds can cause serious health problems. This fact has been proven by doctors and confirmed by the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Molds are a type of fungi that occur naturally in the environment and can be found everywhere. These microorganisms thrive on organic matter, like dead leaves, plants, and trees. The problem is, these microorganisms can attack organic materials in homes as well, particularly those that have been exposed to water and dampness. Organic materials in homes include wood and wooden furniture, walls, and partitions. These also include paper, cardboard, clothing, carpets, rugs and other materials with organic fibers.
Molds consuming organic materials in the house will continue to consume these items until they are completely deteriorated and decomposed. During this process, molds excrete enzymes and these can be toxic to humans. This is the main reason why mold removal is required.
Exposure to molds can cause infections on the skin, eyes, sinuses, throat, tongue, and ears. Ingestion could cause serious problems to the digestive system and may be harmful to the liver, kidneys, lungs, and other internal organs. If proper mold removal procedures are neglected, it could cause serious infections to people living in the vicinity of the affected area.
Most susceptible to these infections include children and babies, pregnant women, the elderly, people with respiratory problems, individuals with weak immune systems, and patients who are undergoing certain treatments as well as people who have undergone organ transplants.
Common symptoms attributed to mold infections include severe coughing, difficulty in breathing, wheezing, irritated eyes and noses, sore throat, nasal and sinus congestion, and skin irritations. Fever might also occur, including vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and dermatitis. Constant headaches could also be experienced if infected, as well as memory problems and mood changes. Fatigue, aches, and pains can also be experienced. Having these symptoms are indicative of mold infections so proper detection and mold removal should be performed.
Neglecting mold removal activities at the onset of mold infestations can cause serious complications that may endanger the life of inhabitants of an infected home. Complications include severe allergies, asthma, pulmonary emphysema (collapse of the lungs), and edema (abnormal accumulation of fluids underneath the skin).
Other serious complications include bleeding of the lungs, convulsions and even comatose. These are severe complications that can endanger life, but could be prevented by proper mold removal activities.
After an incident of flooding that affected a house or an establishment, it is vital to perform a thorough check of the area for possible signs of water damage and the accompanying mold infestations. Mold growths appear as a variety of discolorations on organic surfaces ranging from white, green, brown, orange, red, or black. Molds also excrete a distinctive musky odor. Such signs and indications should be considered before re-entering a water-damaged house or building.
If found positive with molds, proper mold removal activities should be performed which include cleaning, disinfection and deodorizing. Doing so would prevent health risks and other potential hazards to humans, particularly those inhabiting these areas.
