How To Do Wet Carpet Drying Without Professional Help
The carpet is one of the hardest items to clean after a flood. This is because the carpet remains soaked in flood water for as long as there is flood water in the home and the carpet has not been rolled up. Most home carpets also have some sort of padding that sips the water. The best way to do wet carpet drying is to get the services of a professional water removal company or a professional carpet cleaner. Getting it done by a professional carpet cleaner can cost a pretty penny so if you prefer to do the work yourself, you should follow this guideline so you can do wet carpet drying without the help of professionals.
First, as soon as it is possible, get the carpet out of your home. It should be easier to take out carpet that is not glued down to the floor. If your carpet is attached to the floor with staples, be careful not to hurt yourself with the staples and make sure you also don't get a rip on your carpet by carefully removing the staples or the carpet tacks. If the carpet is still too heavy to take outside, plop it up with some sort of support underneath so that the water will drain. When the carpet is no longer heavy with water, take it out to clean on your driveway or your patio.
If the carpet is glued down to the floor, you will have to perform wet carpet drying on it while still attached to the floor using a wet vacuum to suck the water out after cleaning.
Remove all the padding from under the carpet and discard them. The padding underneath the carpet usually holds the water. They don't dry quickly and with the bacteria that is usually in the flood waters, they will begin to stink in a matter of hours. The padding should not be too expensive to replace. Getting rid of them quickly will also save your carpet from further damage. Your goal with wet carpet drying is to save your carpet so that you won't have to get a new one.
Lay down the carpet so that it's flat on the concrete driveway or patio. Using a regular garden hose clean the face of the carpet with water. Turn the carpet upside down and hose the backside of the carpet with water before turning it up again and hosing the face with water one more time. Use carpet shampoo to wash the carpet, following the instructions written on the bottle of the shampoo. If you can't find carpet shampoo you can also use commercial cleaners that are usually ammonia-based. Read the labels carefully to know if a product is suitable for use with a carpet. Hose the foam from the carpet with water. If you have a pressure hose then this is much better to use because this will make rinsing the carpet faster.
Use a wet vacuum to suck out the water from the carpet. To complete the process of wet carpet drying, leave the carpet under the sun to dry turning it over occasionally to help in the drying process.
Part of the process of wet carpet drying also involves cleaning the floor. Clean and disinfect every inch of your floor. Open all doors and windows in your home to let air circulate so that your floor will dry easily. Do not even think about laying down your carpets on the wet floor because this is a sure-fire way of getting mold and mildew on your floor and carpet.
