Preliminary Steps Before Performing Flood Damage Cleanup
Disasters can strike a home when you least expect it. The type of storms that can rage across a state can come unexpectedly, wreaking havoc in its path, while hapless residents watch helplessly as their properties and valuables get washed away by floods. Billions of dollars each year have been lost due to flooding. Unless effective early warning systems are put in place, people will be spending millions more in floods and flood damage cleanup.
The aftermath of a flood could be a cumbersome and a hazardous situation for homeowners. Flood damage cleanup is necessary to save whatever can be restored from your house and valuables and minimize the loss. This can be a great necessity if the house and valuables are not properly covered by insurance, or if your insurance policy does not include damages caused by flood. However, preliminary considerations should be taken into account before engaging in any flood damage cleanup activities. These steps are necessary to avoid any risks on health and safety for the homeowner or the people who will perform these activities. Following these precautions and procedures will ensure a successful flood damage cleanup program and help restore your abode back to habitable conditions.
The first consideration would be to check the structural integrity of the place. The structure could have sustained damages during the flooding that would make it unsafe to perform cleanup activities. Before entering any building or house after a flood, ensure that the structure is safe and sound. It would be best to seek the help of a professional or an engineer and have your place assessed for structural integrity. You would not want the floor collapsing out on you or the walls caving in as you perform your flood damage cleanup.
Another important consideration would be to observe health precautions at all times. Protective clothing should be worn while performing cleanup work and before entering a flooded area. Minimum requirements include rubber gloves, rubber boots or galoshes, goggles, masks and respirators. Floodwaters can contain sewage and a variety of other possibly harmful bacteria that could be hazardous to one's health. As much as possible, avoid direct contact with the floodwaters during cleanup work. If during the course of the flood damage cleanup work your skin made contact with the floodwater, clean yourself with anti-bacterial soap and warm water then douse yourself with rubbing alcohol. It would also be important to avoid inhalation of fumes that can come from the floodwater, particularly if it carries sewage.
As part of flood damage cleanup, it would be necessary to remove any remaining standing water in the vicinity, more particularly in the basement or kitchen where residual waters from the flood could still accumulate. If the floodwater quantity is still considerably large, you may need to use a submersible pump to remove the water out. It would be important to note that it is necessary to remove water in stages than in one single abrupt move. This would prevent any possible buckling or collapsing of the already weakened walls from the flood.
Dirt, mud and other debris and residue from the floodwaters should be completely cleaned off from the affected surfaces like walls and flooring. You may need to use brushes and a detergent and bleach solution as cleaning agent. Wash off with pressurized water then rinse with warm water laced with disinfectant. The area should be dried using air blowers and dehumidifiers. To finalize the flood damage cleanup, spray all affected surfaces with fungicide to prevent the proliferation of mold and mildew growth.
It is important to note that flood damage cleanup should be done immediately after the house or property has been subjected to floods. Prolonging the cleanup work can put additional risks to the owners, on top of the potential damage that may be incurred by the property.
