Preventing Fire Damage In Your Bedroom
It's an old adage that goes, it is far better that your house be flooded, because at some point there is still a great probability that you could salvage some items, rather than your house be set on fire, because at that you will be left with virtually nothing but ashes.
Fire is almost associated in every electricity-fueled appliance, or that barbecue grill, or even that aromatherapy candle that you left lit overnight. As no home is immune from fires, it is still a relief that you could do something to prevent fire damage. There are simple safety precautions that would leave you green and happy on the safe side.
First stop, the bedroom. Every house has a bedroom or two and for many families out there this is the very place where most members would spend quality time, alone or together. This is also the place where we start and end our day.
Studies show even that most fires are happening when everyone is asleep, caused by misuse and poor maintenance of electronic devices. These misuses could be commonly seen when we overload electrical devices in the extension cords and in using portable space heaters too close to combustibles.
A couple of examples of the electrical appliances that may cause fire if not taken care of are the electric blankets and smoke detectors. Electric Blankets are those blankets that are equipped with an integrated electrical heating device and are usually placed on top of the bed sheet.
In order to prevent fire damage caused by electric blankets, make sure that the blanket has an overheat protector or thermostatic controls that will cut the power if the blanket starts to overheat. Or better yet, switch it off before going to sleep. Also, it is recommended that you store your electric blanket flat to prevent overheating caused by damage to the internal wiring.
As much as possible avoid using hot water with your blanket, but in an event that the blanket gets wet, switch it on again to have it dried. Do not fold or roll the electric blanket while it is turned on to prevent heat from building up in the wires and igniting, that could cause fire damage.
Another item on the list is the smoke detectors. Though they may be helpful because they help detect smoke in the vicinity, improper installation and use may also cause fire damage.
The main smoke detector should be closer to the bedroom and at least accessible to the rest of the house. Also, it would be a lot helpful if one would consider installing a detector in every bedroom and if bedroom doors are normally closed at night.
If your detector fails to respond in an emergency, you lose your first line of defense, thus it may be helpful if you would test first your smoke detectors using smoke generators.
As for all other appliances, be wary about overloaded outlets and extension cords and also avoid installing electric cords against the wall as heat may build up there and may cause fire damage.
Be extremely careful, too, with portable heaters. Do not place them too close to combustible items like linen, clothes, curtains and other combustibles.
It is better to invest in quality rather than quantity right? To avoid extensive fire damage always go for the best appliances not only in your bedrooms but house as well. Be sure to test them every so often and make sure that they are approved and safe for use.
