Remove Mildew In Your Wet Carpet

Anyone who has seen or experienced wet carpet attacked by mildew after being soaked in water for long time would know how complex it is to deal with it. Mildew is actually a type of fungus and having wet carpet affected with this living organism is no fun. Incase the wet carpet gets infected by mildew excessively, and then you are forced to throw away the padding and rug.

If your carpet is damp after water damage, the first thing to do to avoid mildew infection is to extract the water by using wet vacuum machine. This is a specially made gadget to work under wet conditions and so it is fully safe. Do not attempt to dry the wet carpet using your home use vacuum. Once you are assured that there is no trace of water in the carpet to promote mildew, and then clean it using a shampoo scrubber.

If the carpet is totally soaked, it should be removed from the floor. Water should be removed from the vicinity of the dried carpet. If the carpet is spread on a wet floor, all the work done so far goes wasted as the mildew would grow again as carpet comes in contact with water on floor. If the wet carpet is not treated properly and that too on time, them mildew would start emanating foul musty smell making the place smell horrible.

Water damage that occurs due to the negligence in maintenance or faulty connections in plumbing inside the home can be largely avoided. You just need to allocate some time at regular intervals and check for any leaks in all the pipes inside the house including basement and all the valves connecting sink and tubs. By chance if you find something broken or cracked above to leak, fix it immediately.

These precautionary measures does not take much of time and you need to pay only very little amount to mason and plumber for rectifying the leak. Similarly, leaks on the roof also should be sealed as soon as possible preferably on the same day. By preventing this common probable cause of water damage spares you from the agony of handling wet carpet especially the mildew attack.

The above discussed prevention technique was for known and visible source of water damage. If the house is hit by flood the impact is huge. Wet carpet is damaged on a large scale. Moreover water flooded inside the house is unclean and runs in straight from the roads and canals. This dirty water is highly contaminated and has lot of germs that spread communicable disease. Not just that they leave stains on the wet carpet as the flood sweeps the carpet.

Usually when the house is damaged by flood, you leave all your belongings and rush out to a safe place along with the family. It would take some time for you to come back to the house and check for the extent of damage. By this time mildew would have set in on the fully soaked carpet in rain water. The wet carpet is drenched in water and this serves as a breeding platform for the mildews. Generally, wet carpet after flood cannot be restored and has to be dumped. But if you are lucky and you could get back to the place in a couple of days, you can try to dry it using wet vacuum and repair it.

If you have already covered the house for flood damage under the home owner scheme before the flood, you can contact the company and claim the insurance amount. This money can be used to buy a new carpet. Carpet cleaning companies are readily available with trained employees to dry and clean wet carpet sooner. You can get information about these service providers from internet, phone book or yellow pages.
