The Importance of Water Damage Repair to Your Home and Belongings

Flooding, sewage backflows and water leaks lead to water damage repair necessity to save items from further damage. The ugly stains and foul odor caused by the dirty and contaminated water on any materials it comes in contact with could also cause sickness or diseases because it is a potential breeding ground of harmful fungus, virus and bacterial activity.

Cleaning a water damaged area requires using proper equipment either run by electricity or gasoline. Should you choose to use gasoline powered water extraction equipment, avoid the gassy fumes by putting the exhaust outside of the house. While it is more advisable to use electric powered pumps to avoid the fumes, you must have a long extension wire which you could plug from an outside source for safety precautions as water and electricity is not a good mix. Part of the safety procedures require that the main power switch within the house or building must be turned off to prevent accidents.

Wading into dirty water without using the proper water damage repair getup is throwing caution to the wind since first of all, you really do not know what is in the water. Although you may have a general idea on what is actually in it, you may never know how harmful the contaminants are. The proper protective gear is a must and should be worn when doing water damage repair activities. Health is still important and irreplaceable while the damaged items could be replaced later on. So before doing any water damage procedure, get your protective apparel in order.

When you have donned on you cleaning attire, you can start water damage repair by removing the water using the water pump equipment. Most water vacuum pumps could either be borrowed or rented if you do not have the needed resources to purchase one. It is important to get the proper equipment so the work could go on smoothly and as easily as possible. Start pumping water out from the high areas going to the lower areas. After the water has been removed, evacuate all the affected equipment, appliances, furniture and fixture in order to have ready access to the floor and the wet carpet if there is one. Remove the wet carpet by rolling it and taking it out of the house for later assessment of cleaning and restoration.

Once all the damaged items are out, clean the floor, walls and other contaminated surfaces using a brush and a mop. After you have cleaned out the necessary surfaces, check nearby areas which may also have been damaged by the water. Dry the area by using fans or opening all passage ways to circulate air. The drying process for a water damage repair process could take three days to one week depending on the extent of damage and the area that must be dried out. Most water damage repair processes require disinfecting to remove the spores of harmful pathogens. For this, you could use bleaching agents or any form of disinfecting chemicals that would also remove the bad odor that clings to the area due to the brief stay of contaminated water. Just remember not to mix bleach and cleaning products that contain ammonia, because combined, they produce deadly or toxic fumes.

Lastly, attend to the items that were removed from the affected area. Carefully appraise what items should be thrown out and what could still be used when the water damage repair is in process. The things that could still be restored must be properly cleaned out, disinfected and dried.

Make sure that everything is thoroughly dried before putting them back in their original space. This is to prevent the growth of mold and mildew that could cause another aspect of damage and endangers the health of individuals.
