Tips To Restore Your Documents, Clothes And Furniture After Water Damage

The bad part about water damage does not necessarily happen on the flood incident itself. The even worse part happens after the water damage has occurred. You are not only bound to face hefty financial expenses, you are also faced with countless restoration. Below are a few basic tips to help you restore your favorite properties like your documents, clothes and furniture.

1. For your important documents like diploma, marriage certificates and the like, lay the papers on a flat surface but keep out of direct sunlight to prevent more water damage. Rinse by gently spraying water. These documents can be very fragile so you have to be extra careful in handling them. If the documents are soggy, you need to lay them in piles. Allow the paper to dry a bit then that's the time you start separating them page by page. Another trick is to use a stringing fishing line for hanging your paper documents like a clothes line. Use an electric fan inside the room to speed up the drying process.

2. For your photographs, make sure that you salvage them from the remaining flood water in no longer than two days. Keeping them soaked in water for a longer period of time not only causes water damage in the form of mold accumulation. It also causes pictures to stick together. Damaged photos in picture frames need to be saved even sooner otherwise the photo surface can stick tightly to the glass making it even more difficult to restore.

To remove a photograph from a picture frame, keep the glass and the photo together then rinse with flowing water. The stream of water will gently separate the photo from the glass. Historical photographs are very sensitive to water and recovering them can be impossible. As a "first aid" practice, dry them up. Immediately consider hiring the services of a professional photo restorer afterwards. Don't store your old photographs inside your freezer without consulting with a professional conservator first.

3. Your couches and carpets are a favorite area for the water damage through toxic mold. Fluffy, dirty and damp materials make it perfect for mold contamination. First, evaluate the damage done. Is restoring possible? Otherwise, if the damage is severe, consider disposing the property for good to ensure safety and to keep the whole family from countless health hazard possibilities.

If the property can still be restored, immediately take the couches and carpets out where direct sunlight is present. Let it dry. Afterwards, get a mixture of your bleach and water. Scrub thoroughly. Rinse then air dry once again. Consider vacuuming afterwards. Keep and eye on the newly restored materials. A clean up may not necessarily keep molds from contaminating your twins.

4. Your clothes are easier to clean. Simply pick them out of the muddy and dirty water. Wash normally but use high-disinfectant laundry soap. Instead of using drying machines, dry your clothes under the heat of the sun.

5. Your books can be easily cleaned and air-dried. First, you need to remove the books from the remaining flood water. If the books are soaked in dirty floor water, rinse them with clean water in a sink or bucket. Let them dry up - indoors. The heat of the sun and the wind can cause your book pages to curl up. For books which have been water-logged, place paper towels in between the wet pages and lay the books flat to dry. Inserting blotting paper in a 30-page interval will be a big help as well.

Water damage may be anything but good news. However, we need to understand the fact that these disasters happen naturally and nobody asks for them to come. The better way to deal with water damage is to restore what could be retained and to continuously celebrate lives which have been given second chance to live.
