What To Do For Proper Restoration And Cleaning Of Your Flooded Home

To avoid further damage to your home and your belongings, once it is safe to venture into your flooded home, you should work on the restoration and cleaning right away. The most practical solution of course is to hire a professional water damage restoration company to come into your home and do all the dirty work. There are insurance policies that cover water damage restoration so you should definitely check if your insurance covers the procedure.

When calling the insurance agent you should also get as much information as you can about processing insurance claims not just for the restoration and cleaning procedure but also for the damages to your home. The insurance company may send someone to your home to assess the damage or they may require you to provide proper documentation of the damages. Simply try to find out all the things that you should do so that you won't have a hard time filing for claims later on.

If you decide to do the restoration and cleaning of your flooded home yourself, then you must make sure that you do it right. If you do not do the restoration and cleaning properly, not only are you exposing yourself to health risks you may also end up causing more damage to your home and to your other belongings.

Before you proceed with the water removal and clean up, make sure you have all the equipment, safety gear and cleaning materials that you need. You will need a sump pump and a water vacuum to remove the water from your home. You don't necessarily have to buy the equipment because there are shops that offer sump pumps and vacuums for rent. For the safety gear, you will need splash goggles, thick-soled rubber boots, rubber gloves and a dust mask. For cleaning materials, you will need cleaning agents, a brush, sponges and wash cloths.

Turn off the main electrical switch to your home to prevent electrocution. You will need to call a professional electrician after you are done with restoration and cleaning so that all electrical installations can be checked for any damage. Only after an electrician has given his go signal should you turn on the electricity in your home and resume using electrical appliances.

Use the sump pump to draw out the water from your flooded home. You can also use a wet vacuum if the flood is not too high. You just need to be aware of the vacuum's tank's water limit so that you'll know when to dispose the water in the tank. If your basement is completely flooded, do not remove all the water immediately. You must, instead, clear out the water for several days removing only two feet of water each day. This is done to prevent your basement walls from caving in.

After all the water has been removed, clear the floors of debris and mud using a shovel. You will also need to take out all your furniture so that you can clean your home properly. You must disinfect all surfaces that came in contact with the flood water. You should also clean all your furniture. You have to make sure that your home and your furniture are entirely dry before you pack your belongings back inside your home. These tasks are all part of the restoration and cleaning process.
