When You Need To Do Flood Damage Cleanup On Your Own
A flood is one of the most damaging calamities that could hit a home. With severe flooding, homeowners may realize that most of their belongings will have to be discarded because of the damage caused by the flood. Flood damage cleanup can also be an incredibly frustrating process that can take days even weeks depending on the severity of the flood. If you want to save yourself the trouble of doing all the stressful work yourself then it's easy to find a reliable water restoration company that can respond to your situation. But if for some reason you choose to do the dirty work yourself or if you have no other choice but to do the flood damage cleanup on your own then you need to follow the following procedures to ensure that you do the flood damage cleanup properly.
Your first priority of course is your family's health and safety as well as your own. If at all possible, make the children stay at a different home while your house is still flooded. Flood water often contains germs that are harmful to human health and you wouldn't want to risk your children's health by exposing them to the floodwater. For your own safety, you need to use safety boots, rubber gloves, a face mask and a splash goggles.
If the flood water in your home has sewage water mixed in then you should really work on doing the flood damage cleanup as quickly as possible. With a completely flooded basement, you will need several days to totally remove the water, as it is recommended that only two to three feet of flood water should be removed from a flooded basement each day. This is because the surrounding soil may be saturated with water and pushing your basement walls in. When you remove the water from the basement too quickly, there is a possibility of your walls caving in.
Use a sump pump that you have purchased from an equipment store to remove the water. If flooding frequently happens in your area, you should get a good sump pump. If this is the first time that a flooding has occurred in your town and you do not expect to be doing another flood damage cleanup in the next few years then you can just rent equipment for the water removal. Aside from the sump pump, you will also need a wet vacuum. Remember to operate the sump pump from outside your home. Sump pumps using gasoline remits carbon monoxide which can lead to poisoning. The reason the sump pump is gasoline-operated is because electricity needs to be switched off in your home while there is still flood water in it and until a licensed electrician has checked all electrical installations.
After you have removed all the water from your home, you can proceed with the next important step of flood damage cleanup which is cleaning and sanitizing of the home. This can be done using commercial disinfectants or by using a chlorine solution. If there are mud and debris on the floor, you will need to clear them out first before you can proceed with washing all the surfaces that came into contact with the flood water. Only after you have cleaned, sanitized and dried your entire home can you put back in all the items that have previously been removed while the cleanup was done.
