Waking Up To The Possibilities Of Search Engine Marketing

Getting people's attention in the world of advertising and marketing gets more and more difficult with each passing year making the ad man's job increasingly complicated. The more images that are thrown at us the less susceptible we are to the advances of the people who are trying to sell us things. What shocked us not that long ago barely registers now, what we found funny can't even raise a smile and what we found desirable changes on an almost daily basis, but still the ad men try to tempt us.

Walking down the high street of any major town or city and it's easy to see the lengths that some companies are going to just to get us to stop and take notice of what they have to say and what they have to sell. There are the obvious ways, like the billboards with film star like models in seductive poses selling perfume and lingerie but there are also less obvious ways. Companies now sponsor landmarks, services and events in a move to get us to part with our money.

The amount of time and energy spent on these marketing campaigns runs into billions of pounds each year. Big companies hire the best directors and actors to se involved with their TV commercials and smaller companies employ the services of expensive design companies to create newspaper and magazine ads for them. But could some of this money be spent elsewhere? Could it be spent more wisely?

The advance of technology has perhaps thrown up the answer to that question as search engine marketing continues to attract attention from big name companies and reap rewards for those who use it to their advantage.

It's true that every month more people are turning to the delights of online shopping. This Christmas more people than ever chose to forgo the high street in favor of the internet to search out and buy their presents and gifts. So it was bound to happen that a new form of search engine marketing would emerge to fit in with this growing new trend.

Search engine marketing, or SEM, acts in a similar way to traditional marketing. The principle is the same; make sure people see your product ahead of everybody else's. Where search engine marketing differs is in the way it has to adhere to certain rules in order to achieve its aims.

The success of any search engine marketing campaign is based on how visible a website is to search engines and how far up a listings page that website appears. The higher placed in a search the website is the more likely people are to visit it and therefore buy products from it. The results can be as productive as billboard advertising for cold drink s during summer or lemon juice TV ads on Pancake Day. Only the most skeptical businesses have not yet woken up to its potential.

Search engine marketing uses several different ways in which to gain search engine placement for its clients. Among these are search engine optimization, or SEO, pay per click, or PPC, and targeted advertising where adverts appear in specific locations on the internet. Locations that are relevant to the product being sold, for instance an ad for shoelaces appearing on websites that deal with feet or shoes only.
As with most things to do with computers and the internet search engine marketing is sometimes hard to visualize in one's mind because it exists in a virtual world and unlike a poster or flyer or newspaper ad it cannot be picked up and physically held. Despite this, though, the results are clear. If you are selling the same product online as 100 other sites, the site with the best search engine marketing behind it will be the most successful as it's the one people will come across first.

With this is mind more major companies are diverting significant sums of money from traditional advertising budgets to search engine marketing with a view to getting a foothold in the online market ahead of their competitors.
