Anyone who is really serious about building their business online essentially needs to get their website into the top ten of the search engine results and preferably in the top three. When your site is on the first page of the search results, the end result will be lots of targeted traffic.

By the way, not all traffic is created equal, traffic from the search engines is tested and known to be quality traffic that converts. If you think of the fundamental reality of the internet, then it is easy understand why this would be the case.

People go online to get information; this information can be for multiple purposes, such as entertainment or for research, whatever the case the fact remains that they are seeking something. When your site appears in the search results for their chosen query, then it stands to reason that you have the best opportunity to turn these people into customers.

Furthermore, generally speaking, to get to the top of the search engines, the content on your site needs to be relevant. No one likes searching and finding results that do match their query.

On the other hand, when they do search with their chosen keywords that explain their needs, and they find relevant results, then they will be happy with the search results. When this takes place, they are far more open to the message been conveyed on your site.

Again, it has been tested and proven that relevancy directly relates to conversions. As a business, your main focus ought to be on conversions, converting searchers to customers and making a profit. If your content is relevant, the searcher becomes happy with the content displayed and as a consequence a certain level of trust is then established.

Now that we understand the fundamentals of why being at the top of the search is important, lets move on to how you can achieve this. After all, being in business online, we ourselves do searches everyday and it makes sense that if we find what we are looking for, we go ahead and get it.

With that said, being in business is all about understanding your customers needs and delivering to them what they are looking for. The fact is, the first step in this process is understanding what they individual is looking for when they search online. They will use keywords to explain what they need and as an online business we need to be there when they type in their query.

All this adds up to what is known in internet marketing as search engine optimization, optimizing your website to appear on the top of the search results. The first step of the process is to reverse engineer the searching process, in other words find out how people search for your product or service online.

As you gather this information, you then begin to develop you site in a way that gets you where you need to be on the search engines. While all this may sound complicated, the good news is that there are tools out there to help you achieve this. You can actually do this yourself and spare the expense of hiring a search engine optimization firm to do it for you.

When you do this for yourself, you will understand the process and will be in a position to make changes when and where you need to, without relying on others to do it for you. So if you want your business to make serious money online then you need to get serious about getting to the top of the search engines. It is time to level the playing field and get in ahead of the competition.
