Social media marketing is a new but extremely powerful traffic generation technique and includes various tools such as social networking (MySpace and Facebook), social bookmarking (Digg, Delicious, etc.), social content sharing (Hub Pages, Squidoo), and a number of other techniques. These are all free techniques to use but may take some time to learn to use correctly and get the best results from.

Article Marketing

Article marketing is one of the older internet marketing methods that is also very useful. This provides you with three sources of traffic which are direct traffic from article directories, search engine traffic (article marketing improves search engine optimization) and webmasters may also re-print your articles on their website. It is important, though, that your articles are interesting, informative and well written. If you do not have good writing skills yourself then it may be better to get someone else to do this for you.

Joint Ventures

Joint ventures may range from link swaps to full business ventures. Joint venture giveaway websites are another popular choice where you submit a product to give away and other webmasters do the same. Everyone then works on attracting traffic to the giveaway website and benefits from people who download their products and subscribe to their list. This can be an excellent free source of advertising but you will need your own product of high perceived value to give away to others.

Traffic Exchanges

Traffic exchanges are not as targeted as some of the other methods mentioned above but it can get large volumes of traffic to your web pages in a short space of time and the more exposure you get, the more likely you will be to make a sale. The important thing here is to get as many hits as possible as your average conversion rate will be quite low (unless you are advertising products of use to webmasters). You can get these either by doing a lot of surfing yourself or by buying credits.

The more advertising methods you can use the better as increased exposure from these methods means more visits and more sales.
