How To Choose Between Satellite Internet Providers
High speed Internet has almost entirely replaced dialup technology in homes across America and around the world. High speed Internet is commonly available and easy to hook up in most cities and populated areas, but most DSL and broadband services have not made it into many rural areas. As a result, the only option for fast internet service is to look to one of several satellite Internet providers.
There are quite a few companies to choose from, and not all of them offer the same services or pricing. Therefore it is important to do your research before signing on with a company. Here are some suggestions for choosing between ISPs.
Price out the cost of installation. Installation prices vary between providers, and can be as low as $300 or as much as $600. Be sure you ask the company not only what their installation fee is, but also what your total first bill will be. Sometimes there are other fees in the first bill that are not quoted unless you ask. When comparing prices between companies, ensure that you are comparing the amount that the total bill would be. This is the only way to get an accurate picture of the differences between your choices.
Installation fees may be one time fees, but they are also non refundable, so it is important to make sure before signing up with a service that the fee is something you are willing to pay. In addition to getting quotes and comparing prices, this also means comparing contract terms, the quality of service you will be getting, and other factors. More information on what to look for in these areas is provided below.
Equipment fees. In addition to paying for the installation, you will have to pay for the use of the equipment. Some offer two different choices: Customers can either buy the equipment outright, or they can lease it for a lesser charge every month. Although leasing the equipment means less money spent up front, you end up paying much more than the value of the equipment if you keep the service over a long period of time.
Additionally, if you switch companies, the equipment does not belong to you, even though you may have paid as much as it would have cost over the time you've rented it. If this happens you will need to pay a whole new installation fee with your new service provider, regardless of whether the equipment you have been using is compatible.
Look for a two-way satellite connection. There are two different types of connections offered. The slower speed is a one-way connection, and is not fast or powerful enough for even basic users. Therefore you will want to be sure to choose a provider that offers a two-way connection. It is not worth saving money if it renders your Internet connection virtually useless!
Look for good technical support and maintenance. This is especially important if you have not used satellite Internet before. Technical support is important in case anything goes wrong with your connection or hardware, problems which you may not know how to fix. You'll need an educated person to answer all your questions. In addition, service providers that do the maintenance themselves are better than companies that contract out to other companies, as the latter demonstrates a lack of responsibility for their own equipment and connection.
Require good coverage. When making a decision, you should choose only between companies that have more than one satellite in the sky, to ensure better coverage. Depending solely on one satellite leaves you vulnerable to problems with your coverage or windows of no coverage.
Consider the contract terms. Because the installation of expensive equipment is involved, most make their customers sign a long term contract, usually for at least a year. If you cancel your service with the provider before this time is up, you will have to pay a hefty termination fee, just like with a cell phone contract.
Although it is true that DSL and broadband are much more convenient and user friendly, satellites make it possible for people outside of highly populated areas to have access to high speed Internet. Like with any other service, though, it is important to choose carefully between satellite Internet providers. This will ensure that you are getting both quality and a good value for your money.
