Locating laptop wireless Internet access, also known as WiFi, while traveling can be quite a challenge, particularly when you are in a strange town and do not know where the best hotspots are. Many people do not realize WiFi hotspots can be found if you know how to go about looking. Here are a few tips for finding wireless Internet while traveling.

Get WiFi in your hotel. Many hotels these days offer laptop wireless Internet access, particularly business class hotels. It is becoming fairly common for people to bring their laptop computers with them when they travel, and therefore desire a connection in order to check email, browse the Internet, check banking accounts online, and attend to their professional business. Therefore hotels often have WiFi, sort of as a selling point for attracting clientele to their facilities.

You may be able to find this as a free service for paying customers, but it is more common to have to pay for a short block of time, such as an hour or two. Also, if you have a paid account with one of the hotspot carriers, such as T-Mobile or AT&T, you may want to look for an establishment offering that specific carrier. Even McDonalds is offering WiFi these days!

Airports are another good place to find WiFi, which is especially handy if you are traveling. You can also usually find free wireless Internet at libraries.

Pay for mobile wireless. Laptop wireless Internet access can also be purchased for a specific laptop, just as cell phone service can be purchased for your phone. Basically, you install a special PCMCIA card and software on your computer, pay a certain amount every month, and get a certain amount of bandwidth to use on the Internet each month. You access the Internet wirelessly via the cell phone network, which allows you to get online from most locations where there is a cell phone signal strong enough to allow you to download email and web pages.

Although mobile wireless plans are great for people who need to be able to access email and the Internet on the go, they also have some significant drawbacks. For one thing, the connection is can be somewhat slow, since it is a connection with a regular cell phone network. Also, you often do not get very much bandwidth per month, and going over your quota can be quite costly. Thankfully, new carriers are expanding their selections on plans, and costs are steadily decreasing. Knowing you can hop on the Internet right away without having to find a WiFi location is often more convenient, which far outweighs the disadvantages.

It really is amazing that you can find wifi in so many places! Just another thought for those of you who don't want to have to look for the coffee shops etc. with the Wifi you can rent mobile broadband cards from a company called WifiRents.com they offer the data cards for rent without signing into a 2 year contract. Unfortunately they are not free like the coffee shop wifi but if you are like me and you want to be able to access the internet from the car or the campsite or the hotel (and not just be limited to the wifi hotspots) you might really enjoy the service they offer.
