Text Message Advertising Strategy And Campaign Ideas

Basic Strategy

Text message ads like television ads are limited only by your creativity. You’d be surprised with what you can pack into a text message. The basic text message ad strategy that I recommend is:

1 - Build your list of satisfied customers - by inviting customers to send a message.
2 - Entice your customers with a rewarding special offer
3 - Place your call to action on receipts, signs, flyers, in print ads, radio spots etc ...
4 - Send a test message to yourself before sending to your customers
5 - Send one to two messages containing special offers every week
6 - Sit back and watch your sales grow!

Campaign Ideas

Here are a few ideas for text message advertising. This is by no means an exhaustive list but it provides a good starting point. Some of the ideas may not be suitable for your business, your strategy or your style. However feel free to tailor each campaign to your business needs.

As you read and plan remember that U.S. Carriers allow 140 to 160 characters per message. Try to keep your messages to less than 140 characters. Limit your abbreviations, yet if you need to abbreviate do so in a way that most people will understand it.

Monthly birthday campaign

Are you a September baby? Stop by Suzies Salon in NY to save 10% . Not your birthday - forward this msg to a friend.

Do you have a September Birthday? Stop by Joes Pub in Dallas to save 10% on your next meal in September.

This campaign is great since everyone has a birthday. Remind your customers that they can forward your message to someone whose birthday is in that month. I suggest you send this message out on the 1st of the month. If you start this campaign be persistent and run it every month.

Surveys

Tell us your favorite dish on the menu. Text Fish, Chicken or Beef to (214)686-9411.

What’s your favorite color for a car? Text Red, White, Blue or Silver to (214)686-9411.

What month is your birthday in? Text the full month as in September to (214)686-9411.

Who is your favorite stylist here? Text their 1st name to (214)686-9411

Surveys are great because they allow you to not only build a list but build a targeted list. As in the birthday example we can send a message to those born in September, versus sending to the entire list. In the food example notice how you can target certain meals for specials. Once you have a list of people who like Fish you can send target them with your fish specials and your new fish dishes.

Implementing a text message ad campaign is limited only by your creativity.
