Andrew Bird Tickets Are Favorable Now More than Ever

"There were years where I kind of thought, 'Wouldn't it be nice to be attached to some kind of hyped movement, get a leg up?'" singer and songwriter Andrew Bird said to Pollstar. Instead, the folk singer trekked his way through the country with simply his beat up car, his guitar, a violin and his voice to get him to the top. "I've got an audience that expects the unexpected and is not expecting to hear the hits or the hooks. Nor do I have an audience that's got its arms folded, thinking, 'Ok, let's see if you're as good as they hype.'...I probably have the loveliest audience you could ever hope to have." Instead, his audiences pick up Andrew Bird tickets knowing that they are always in for a real treat, or at least a little surprise.

"My M.O. has always been the live show. That's where I put all my energies," Bird continued with Pollstar. Though he is a-typical in his form of recording, usually inactive in the studio and often avoiding rehearsals, he flies on stage as an active performer who, according to Red Ryder Entertainment's roster, shows up in at least 200 venues a year.

Finally after nearly a decade of doing the hard work himself with little (aside from three albums) to show for it, his latest effort, Noble Beast, and a few free concert performances, have made Bird a hot topic among indie circles. Last year he may have traded in his dignity to perform a free concert in Chicago's Millennium Park and a sold out one at Carnegie Hall, but the result was unforgettable critical and commercial acclaim that led to a cascade of reviews (even ones in the New York Times Magazine and Spin) followed by a few paid performances. Even with all the newfound fame that has come with 2009's Noble Beast, you can forget the pop and indie rock that you typically hear on the radio; "That's just not the nature of the music that I make. I've changed so much within a record, let along from one record to the next, that I'm usually changing too quick for anything."

"Noble Beast's been out for three weeks and we've sold almost half of what we sold on the last album already," Andrew Troolin, Bird's manager since his 20s (he's now 35), said talking to Pollstar. "But I think the touring has helped us get there. In the leaner years, when he wasn't selling as many records and didn't have quite the full support of label, publicity and marketing, and all the great things we have right now, it was just him on the road...and those were sometimes pretty brutal years." Now, with the help of his most sophisticated album yet, Bird is setting out on a full tour.

For nearly half his time in the business Bird has been with Red Ryder, previously working with the current President, Erik Selz, while stringing as the violinist for the Squirrel Nut Zippers during Bird's stint with them in the '90s. "He's extremely attentive, has had a very focused roster and I knew I was going to get a lot of attention from him. He's been in the community I've lived in for three years, and that helps to build a walk-in to your agent's office where you can look at a map and talk about venues and stuff like that." The attentiveness has paid off for the bird, who can finally claim a style all his own.
