Coachella Music Festival Tickets - New Additions After Amy Winehouse Leaves Lineup
In news that shouldn't come as a big shocker, British chanteuse Amy Winehouse has cancelled her Coachella performance after being charged with assault in London last week. The charges stemmed from an incident that occurred at a party in September and Winehouse will reportedly be unable to obtain a U.S. visa in time for her April 19 headlining spot at the festival at Empire Polo Field in Indio, California. Although Wino's rep Chris Goodman did not comment specifically on the singer's visa status, he did tell The Associated Press that her "legal case would not be sorted out in time for her to make the music fest." Winehouse is due in court on March 17 to handle charges made by Sherene Flash, who told a British tabloid that she was hit in the eye by Winehouse after asking to have her photo taken with the Grammy winner.
Although Amy Winehouse will be absent from the 2009 Coachella bill (she did appear in Indio in 2007), several artists will be jumping the pond for the So-Cal festival, most notably April 17 headliner Paul McCartney. Coachella will be his maiden appearance at the American festival, and when asked why he picked Coachella among the other American festivals he simply stated, "I have heard that Coachella is one of the greatest festivals in the world. I'm really excited to get out there and rock."
The former Beatle leads the bill with fellow headliners the Killers and the Cure. Among the other more than 100 acts that will perform at Coachella are the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Morrissey, My Bloody Valentine, Leonard Cohen, Thievery Corporation, MSTRKRFT and more. After Winehouse's withdrawal, the festival organizers announced that Devendra Banhart, Chemical Bros., Murder City Devils, the Orb and Etienne de Crecy have all been added to the lineup. Also joining the 2009 Coachella bill are DJs Flying Lotus, Public Enemy producers the Bomb Squad, Kode 9 and Daedulus, who will all perform in the Dome. This year Coachella will adhere to its tradition of serving up equal amounts of dance/electronica music and indie rock. From the electronic community fans can expect Girl Talk, Groove Armada, Roni Size, the Crystal Method and more, while indie rock will be represented by the Hold Steady, Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, the Black Keys and others. Coachella is also known for showcasing up-and-coming bands, and this 2009 is no exception. Among the acts who will likely break into the mainstream (whether their fans like it or not) subsequent to their Coachella performance is Cage the Elephant, Gang Gang Dance, Lykke Li, Late Of The Pier, N.A.S.A. and the Airborne Toxic Event. The lineup is also rounded out by industry veterans like Paul Weller, Henry Rollins, Bob Mould and U.K. Black soul legend Booker T & the MGs.
The Coachella Music Festival was inaugurated in 1999 and has quickly climbed up the festival rungs to become one of the premier American musical festivals. The Goldenvoice-sponsored festival has hosted iconic bands like Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine and Prince over the years. Goldenvoice also hosts another festival, Stagecoach (the country counterpart to Coachella), the following weekend on the same Empire Polo Field location. Hurry up and get your Coachella Music Festival tickets because they will sell out, Amy Winehouse or no Amy Winehouse.
