No Doubt emerged out of Anaheim, Calif. (also the home of the happiest place on Earth, Disneyland) in 1987 when Gwen Stefani and her brother Eric formed a garage band with singer John Spence and bassist Tony Kanal. Sadly, Spence took his own life just as the band began to play local shows and Gwen replaced him as lead vocalist. Drummer Adrian Young and bassist Tom Dumont completed the lineup and No Doubt signed with Interscope in 1991, releasing their debut album the following year. The album sunk immediately due to its drastically different sound than the popular grunge bands of the time and it was back to the drawing board. When Interscope balked at releasing anymore No Doubt album's in the wake of the band's disappointing debut, No Doubt self-recorded Beacon Street Collection. The punk offering restored the label's faith in the band, although at this point Eric Stefani exited the lineup in favor of an animation career (he later worked for the popular adult cartoon series The Simpsons.
No Doubt scored their big break with their 1995 album Tragic Kingdom, which ironically chronicled the breakup between Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal. Singles like "Just a Girl" and "Spiderweb" pushed Tragic Kingdom into the top ten upon its release and established Gwen, with her pinup girl meets skater girl looks, as the face of No Doubt. The album's third single, "Don't Speak," became their most popular song and received ample radio and MTV airtime while fans waited for the band's next release. No Doubt kept everyone waiting until 2000, when The Return of Saturn surfaced and spawned hit singles "Ex-Girlfriend" and "Simple Kind of Life."
At the apex of No Doubt's success, frontwoman Gwen Stefani began to test the waters of a solo career, scoring a Grammy on her first try out with her duet with rapper Eve, "Let Me Blow Your Mind." Gwen has since issued two popular solo albums, Love.Angel.Music.Baby. and The Sweet Escape, while 2001's Rock Steady, with hit single "Hey Baby," was the last release from No Doubt. Hurry up and get your No Doubt tickets soon because fans can't wait to see the band back in action!
