Prince Tickets - Prince Unveils Three New Albums in 2009
Prince is making it rain (although not purple) in 2009, as the label-less artist is planning to release three albums this year. According to an interview Prince granted with the Los Angeles Times, the new Prince material will be released digitally until he selects a retailer to release the music in physical form. Two of the albums are tentatively titled MPLSOUND and Lotus Flower. The third album is for his protege, Bria Valente; Prince was heavily involved with the recording of her album Elixir. MPLSOUND includes a cameo of Q-Tip on one track and the electro album was recorded at Prince's Paisley Park compound in Minneapolis. The more guitar-driven Lotus Flower includes a cover of Tommy James "Dreamer" and the Shondells "Crimson & Clover," among other tracks. Check out Prince tickets today.
Artists are rarely popular, controversial, flamboyant and influential all at once, but Prince (or the Artist Formerly Known As) is all four rolled into one. Prince emerged in the 1980s during the heyday of Madonna and Michael and Janet Jackson. Although Prince released his first two albums in the late-'70s, he went largely unnoticed until 1980's Dirty Mind, which first introduced the world to his overtly sexual guitar pop. Prince followed Dirty Mind with Controversy and 1999 (which contained hits "Little Red Corvette," which was among the first videos by a black performer to be played on MTV, and "Delirious") but really hit it out of the park with 1984's Purple Rain. The iconic album for which Prince is best known sold over 10 million copies in the U.S., spent 24 weeks atop the charts and made Prince a bona fide star.
Prince went pop for Purple Rain's follow-up, Revolution, but then went experimental on Around the World in a Day, which sold two million copies despite being Prince's most bizarre release yet. In 1986 "Kiss," from Parade, brought Prince back to the top of the charts. The album was the soundtrack to Prince's film Under the Cherry Moon, which bombed at the box office. 1987's Sing 'O the Times was hailed a masterpiece by critics and the following year Prince released Lovesexy after pulling The Black Album just shy of its release. The album was a commercial failure, but Prince continued his bumpy ride on the charts with the soundtrack for Batman, which went straight to number one.
After issuing Graffiti Bridge, the sequel to Purple Rain, Prince formed the band the New Power Generation and they released Diamonds and Pearls soon afterward. Prince's 12th album, which was titled with a cryptic symbol, was released in 1993, around the same time that the artist legally changed his name to the symbol. After entering into a legal dispute with Warner, Prince independently released "The Most Beautiful Girl" in 1994 and scored his biggest hit in years. After releasing The Gold Experience on Warner, much to his chagrin, Prince released Chaos and Disorder as an independent artist. The three-disc Emancipation was released on his own label NPG (distributed by EMI), but Prince followed up (its disappointing sales) with a long-awaited collection of unreleased material and outtakes called Crystal Ball in 1998 as a way to please fans.
Prince continued to churn out an unpredictable array of albums into the new millennium with his single "1999" becoming an obvious New Year's anthem, but alienated fans when he became a Jehovah's Witness. In 2003 he made a comeback with N.E.W.S. and earned a Grammy nod for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 2005. 3121 was released in 2006 and topped the charts, followed by 2007's Planet Earth, which was released as a free covermount with U.K. newspaper The Mail before Columbia issued the album worldwide.
